Puppey Gives an Honest Assessment of Team Secret’s Current State
Despite its best efforts, Team Secret has not produced the top results it has been accustomed to in the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) 2021-22. In Tour 3 so far, the team has had a middling showing, sitting in the middle of the pack with three wins three losses. In a recent post-match winner's interview, captain Clement "Puppey" Ivanov acknowledged the team's current rough state and said they would persist. It was important to learn from their losses, Puppey explained, as even if they didn't qualify for The International (TI) this year, they needed to continue to improve and do the right thing.
Puppey acknowledges that Team Secret has been having a rough time lately
In the winner’s interview that followed Secret’s 2-1 victory over Gaimin Gladiators in Tour 3, captain Puppey gave an honest assessment of how the team has been performing lately. According to Puppey, the loss to Entity earlier in the league left the team feeling "depressed", as the loss prevented the team from finishing in the top two.
“I mean, we got quite depressed after losing to Entity as it kinda solidified the fact that we cannot get first or second place in the group stage which gives a lot of points and also a nice lead way into playing the Major. So, I am not really sure how to answer that question without getting more depressive answers,” said Puppey.
Nonetheless, the seasoned support player went on to provide a more detailed description of the present situation by saying that the players had been making attempts to resolve the issues. Regardless of how the future unfolds, Puppey stressed the importance of improving both individually and collectively.
“So, let’s keep it at the fact that it’s rough and we will try our best. And we try to iron out all the problems we had against Entity to perhaps develop a better playstyle and then move towards winning some of these games. Because okay sure - maybe we will not qualify for this TI but then something has to happen. Like somebody needs to start playing better - me, whoever, whatever, or we need to get a better idea of playing Dota so even if something is not working out, we should probably fix it, and figure out what can work out for us.”
As of now, Puppey believes that Secret is on the right track, given its recent win over Team Liquid, a team that has been doing well in WEU (Western Europe) in the past few months.
“And I think overall we are in a better place because winning [against] Liquid already showed that we were doing the right thing, so we are on the right track.”
With victories over Team Liquid and Gaimin Gladiators in its last two series, Secret seems to be gaining momentum in Tour 3. Although it has been competitive in its losses as well, it hasn't prevailed and won.
Team Secret struggled in Tour 1 and Tour 2 and narrowly missed the top four, so the team will desperately want to finish in the top four this time and make it to the PGL Arlington Major. Right now, Puppey and his teammates face a very tough road towards gaining a direct TI11 invite, but considering their caliber and experience, it won't be surprising if they turn things around and grab the coveted invite.
Team Secret’s final series in Tour 3 will take place against goonsquad on 12th July.
