Mason, one of the most popular western Dota 2 streamers, has been banned from Twitch after seemingly mispronouncing a homophobic word. While Mason "mason" Venne was talking about Aghanim’s Scepter on Kunkka in one of his recent Twitch streams, a slip of the tongue led him to speak a banned word on Twitch. He mistakenly combined “Fan” and “Aghs” which gave rise to something different, which happened to sound like a homophobic slur. As a result, he has now been banned and will not be able to stream for seven days. However, he has communicated that he has already challenged this decision because he accidentally used the slur. Overall, this is the fourth instance of Mason getting inflicted by a ban on Twitch.

Popular NA streamer Mason banned from Twitch for seven days

Earlier on March 13, 2021, Mason took to Twitter to communicate that it was nobody’s fault and that he had already appealed the ban. If his appeal would be successful, he would start streaming “soon.”

On the livestream, Mason was mentioning the reason behind not being a fan of Kunkka’s Aghanim’s Scepter, trying to state that he was never a “fan of the Aghs” but he mistakenly combined the words. He then instantly realized that he had uttered something offensive, “Oh my god! I didn’t mean to say that word. I think I just said the F word. I didn’t mean to say that word.”

Twitch’s policy regarding discriminatory and racist practices reads:

“Hateful conduct and harassment are not allowed on Twitch. Hateful conduct is any content or activity that promotes or encourages discrimination, denigration, harassment, or violence based on the following protected characteristics: race, ethnicity, color, caste, national origin, immigration status, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, serious medical condition, and veteran status. We also provide certain protections for age. Twitch has zero tolerance for hateful conduct, meaning we act on every valid reported instance of hateful conduct. We afford every user equal protections under this policy, regardless of their particular characteristics.”

The inconsistent implementation of these policies have been criticized by many fans and viewers. Many believe that Mason should have not been hit with a ban since they believe that it was clearly an accident.

Before this suspension, Mason had been banned from Twitch a couple of times in 2020 and most recently, in January 2021. While the reasons for the second and third ban are relatively unknown, the first one was likely imposed because of extensive racism in his Twitch chat. None of the bans has been longer than seven days.
