Week 5 Recap of the 2021 DPC Season 1: Upper Division [All Regions]
  • Week 5 of the DPC 2021 Season 1: Upper Division concluded yesterday, February 21.
  • Fifteen slots still remain to be taken after Secret, Natus Vincere and Virtus.pro qualified to the Major last week. Many teams also find themselves knocked out of the Upper Division at the end of the fifth week.
  • We take a look at the points table of the Upper Division in all the six regions after the conclusion of the fifth week.

Week 5 (February 15-21) of the 2021 DPC Season 1: Upper Division witnessed some top tier teams getting handed their first loss of the Regional Leagues, some others winning consequential matches that strengthen their chances of making it to the Major, and finally some underperformed teams, unfortunately, ending in the bottom two spots which demote them to the Lower Division in the next season. After Team Secret, Natus Vincere and Virtus.pro qualified for the Major last week, no other team was able to book a slot in the fifth week which means that fifteen slots remain up for grabs.

Heading into the last and unarguably the most decisive week, here is a look at what exactly panned out and where the teams stand in each region’s points table after the fifth week.

1. Southeast Asia (SEA)

Neon Esports lost the top spot in the points table to Fnatic after a hard-fought series that ended 2-1 in the latter’s favor. TNC and T1 grabbed easy wins in the fifth week and are now placed at the third and the fourth positions with a similar W-L record. With 23savage’s addition, BOOM Esports was able to sweep both Execration and Vice Esports and are now dependent on the results of TNC and T1 to reach the Major. Vice Esports is the first team in the SEA DPC 2021 Season 1: Upper Division to get relegated to the Lower Division in the next season.

Team Secret continued their domination in the EU DPC 2021 Season 1: Upper Division as they registered an effortless 2-0 victory over High Coast Esports. Team Nigma came back strongly in the series against Tundra Esports after having lost three in a row. Alliance, who were looking comfortable for a second-place finish, were handed a minor upset by Vikin.gg. OG also lost a vital match against Liquid, which has now spiced up the region’s qualification scenario. Vikin.gg and High Coast Esports are eliminated from the Upper Division.

Virtus.pro continued their unbeaten streak in the CIS DPC 2021 Season 1: Upper Division after a crushing 2-0 victory over NoTechies as they showcased strategies like position 4 Jungle Huskar, offlane Bounty Hunter, and a safelane Queen of Pain. On the other hand, Natus Vincere’s undefeated streak was ended by Team Spirit yesterday in a thrilling three-match series. AS Monaco Gambit, Team Spirit, and EXTREMUM all have a 3-3 W-L record and one of them is accompanying VP and Na’Vi to Singapore. Solo’s team, NoTechies is the first team to get eliminated.

5. North America (NA)

Quincy Crew can, for now at the least, proclaim themselves as the ruler of the NA Dota 2 competitive scene as they defeated Evil Geniuses 2-1 in a very hyped match. Dubu’s team, Undying, also defeated 4 Zoomers last night and now have a 5-1 W-L record, similar to Evil Geniuses. Ppd’s Sadboys had a horrendous week as they lost two matches, a disappointing one against Black N Yellow and an expected one against Quincy Crew. 5ManMidas is the first team in the region to get demoted to the Lower Division in the next season.

Quincy Crew, who has almost qualified to the Major, may pose a serious threat to teams like Team Secret and Virtus.pro considering their skill level and recent form.

6. South America (SA)

Beastcoast, who had been the only team not to have lost even a single map, suffered a massive upset against NoPing e-sports, as they got absolutely crushed in the series, losing it 2-0. NoPing e-sports’ back-to-back wins now place them in contention for the Major slot and Thunder Predator and SG e-sports. Latam Defenders is the first team in SA to get relegated to the Lower Division in the second season of the DPC.

Week 6 will be a critical one for all regions except China as we will potentially be knowing the teams that make it to the Singapore Major. There could be tiebreakers scenarios in many regions, leading to another week of exciting Dota 2 action. Unfortunately for the teams in the bottom halves of the points table, some of them will be bidding adieu to the Upper Division as they get relegated to the Lower one.
