Indian Esports Continues to Grow in 2020
Prize money in Indian esports grew more than 180% in 2019 to over USD 1.5 million and the Indian esports industry continues to display robust activity and participation in other game titles. In October 2020, Garena concluded one of its largest professional Free Fire esports tournaments in the country, the Free Fire India Championship 2020 (FFIC) with a prize pool of INR 50 Lakhs (~USD 67K). FFIC is estimated to have received over 300,000 team registrations and at the time of writing this, the viewership for just the grand finals of the tournament on YouTube is in excess of 9 million views.
Earlier this year in February 2020, in a conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd. stated that “there is a huge potential for gaming to grow” in India, and that “gaming will be bigger than music, movies and television shows put together.” Jio has shown its intent of venturing big into esports and with the JioMart Gameathon announcement, it has taken the first step in that direction.
