  • Fortnite installs a giant Black Panther statue as a tribute to late actor Chadwick Boseman.
  • The statue is an installation which was planned before the Black Panther actor’s death.

Among the outpouring online tributes from fans and friends paying their respects to the star of Marvel's Black Panther, Fortnite is honouring the late Chadwick Boseman with an in-game Black Panther monument. The statue, called Panther’s Prowl, is a new map location that coincides with the Marvel Nexus crossover and is located next to Misty Meadows. Treasure chests can be found on the ground and in the mouth of the giant black panther. A video uploaded by Reddit user TheRazoredEdge shows 2 players pay a visit to the island and don’t engage in combat.

Epic Games has confirmed that the addition of Panther’s Prowl was planned before Black Panther actor’s death. The monument was taken by some to mean that a Black Panther skin will be made available soon. An Epic Games spokesperson told Kotaku, “As with the rest of the world, we were greatly saddened to learn of the passing of actor Chadwick Boseman." The Black Panther monument arrived this morning as part of a previously-planned narrative for the new Chapter 2 - Season 4 season.

Boseman died on 28th August after a four-year battle with colon cancer. Several Marvel stars have paid tribute to the actor, with Black Panther co-star and friend Michael B. Jordan penning a personal tribute that read, “‘Is this your king!?’ Yes . he . is!”

The MARVEL Universe Meets Fortnite

The new season of Fortnite, technically titled Chapter 2: Season 4 Nexus War is an event where major characters from the Marvel universe team up to fight the villain Galactus. Players who purchase Fortnite’s seasonal battle pass will be able to unlock the likes of Iron Man, Storm, Mystique, Doctor Doom, Groot, and She-Hulk, along with an amnesiac Thor. Epic will also make X-Men available later in the season.

Epic had been dropping hints that the next season of Fortnite would be Marvel-themed and they followed that up by releasing an in-game comic book. The comics explain how the crossover happened. The power of Fortnite’s island attracted both Thor and Galactus.  Thor eventually summoned the other heroes including Iron Man, Wolverine, and Captain America. At one point Thor drops his iconic hammer, and a crater actually appeared on the Fortnite island in-game where it landed. The comic ended with the phrase “to be continued in season four.” Epic describes the conflict as “the war to save reality.”
