Dota 2’s Free To Play Documentary To Be Released On Netflix

A Dota 2 documentary featuring Dendi, Fear, and hyhy competing at The International 2011 will be added to Netflix shortly. This seems like yet another move by Valve that aims to market its popular MOBA title after the successful release of the anime, DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, in March 2021. Free To Play is set for a Netflix release on Monday, April 19, 2021. Free To Play is one of the first Valve documentaries that showcases the stories of three Dota 2 professionals who fought and overcame their struggles to compete at the first-ever $1 Million USD esports tournament, The International 2011 (TI1).

Dota 2 Free To Play documentary featuring Dendi, Fear, and hyhy to release on Netflix on April 19, 2021

Free To Play was initially released on March 19, 2014, on Valve’s YouTube channel when the video-game industry was just starting to gain a foothold in the mainstream global market. Dota 2 had already started to attract more and more players who were eager to learn about its ever scaling million dollar tournament, The International. 

Now, though the Free To Play documentary is seven years old, it reflects what is still prevalent today - the struggles to carve out a niche for oneself in the esports industry and the gigantic prize pool of Dota 2’s World Championship, The International.

Free To Play talks about the story of three Dota 2 professionals, Benedict "hyhy" Lim, Danil "Dendi" Ishutin, and Clinton "Fear" Loomis, who took the path less traveled by - competing in the esports industry, aiming to make all the difference - winning $1,000,000 USD as the first prize. Each of them had an intrinsically exciting story that is cohesive and will undoubtedly leave any gamer filled with emotion. 

Free To Play is scheduled for a Netflix premiere on April 19, 2021. It remains to be seen if the documentary will continue to be available on YouTube. 

It is increasingly thrilling to watch Valve make strides towards the promotion of Dota 2 after they had sat the majority of 2020 in eerie silence. The revival of the Dota Pro Circuit, the overwhelming introduction of the Dota 2 anime, and the Free To Play documentary’s addition to Netflix to reach a broader audience are steps aimed in the right direction. However, it will be intriguing to see if all these steps and efforts bear fruit.
