The SEA Games is set to return next year in November 2021 and will for only the second time in history, feature esports as an Olympic sanctioned event. Host nation Vietnam has decided to include esports for the SEA Games, 2021 after it made its debut last year at the 30th edition with six games, including Dota 2.
Whereas Dota 2 was a part of these six titles last year, it is being debated if the popular MOBA will be included in the set this year.
Dota 2 In Question For SEA Games 2021
Recently, host Vietnam had declared that it was adding four more disciplines to the SEA Games in 2021, raising the total tally to 40 games. Esports was added but the titles comprising it have not yet been officially revealed. Last year, in the SEA Games 2019, Dota 2 made its debut alongside 5 other esports titles namely Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Arena of Valor, Starcraft II, Tekken 7, and Hearthstone
According to Vietnam Express International, Duong Vi Khoa, vice president of the Vietnam Recreational Esport Association, had earlier communicated that Dota 2, Arena of Valor, and Pro Evolution Soccer will be three out of the six esports titles at SEA Games 2021.
However, recently, Fisal Junior 46 who is the coach of Team NXL (a popular team in Free Fire) made an Instagram post which indicated that Dota 2 has been scrapped from the set of six titles for SEA Games 2021. According to it, six titles that will feature at the SEA Games are:
- Free Fire
- Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
- Arena of Valor
- Starcraft II
- Fifa Online 4
So according to this post,Dota 2 and Tekken 7 have been replaced by Free Fire and Fifa Online 4 at the SEA Games 2021.
However, an official statement on this matter is yet to be released by the organizers of the tournament. So the fate of Dota 2 at the SEA Games 2021 still remains to be officially decided.
The SEA Games 2021 is scheduled to take place in Hanoi, Vietnam from November 21 to December 2, 2021. Details about the qualifiers for this tournament are yet to be revealed. Stay tuned to AFK Gaming for further information about this event.
