Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) has become one of the most popular mobile games in India.
However, being a battle royale game, it requires high processing power due to its high graphics quality and intensive gameplay. As a result, a lot of devices might struggle to run the game smoothly without lag.
This article provides tips and tricks on optimizing your phone and in-game settings to improve your BGMI gameplay experience.

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) is one of the most popular mobile games in India. Being a battle royale game, it features intense gameplay and high-quality graphics, which makes it a processor-intensive game. Such games demand a smartphone with good specifications to run it smoothly. If the device is not able to handle such a processor-intensive game, it leads to performance issues, frame-per-second (FPS) stutter, lagging gameplay, and more.

For players to perform well in the game , having a stable and smooth game performance is a must. Hence, optimizing their phone and in-game settings to improve the device’s performance can be a very crucial step. However, with so many different settings and configurations available, it can be difficult to know where to start. In this article, we will explore some phone and in-game settings that players can tweak to improve a device’s performance and ensure a smooth and lag-free gameplay experience.

Phone Settings to improve BGMI performance

  • Empty Storage: Keeping optimum phone storage is a crucial and often overlooked factor that can significantly impact BGMI’s performance. When the device storage is near its maximum capacity, the phone does not carry out its tasks efficiently, resulting in performance issues. Hence, players should always clear their devices of unnecessary files or apps.

Although there is no specific limit for the minimum empty storage for efficient performance, it is recommended to keep approximately 5 Gigabytes (GB).

  • Close Background Apps: After minimizing or closing an app on a mobile device, it may continue to run in the background. This background app may consume Random Access Memory (RAM) and processing power of the device, ultimately lowering the device’s overall performance. In order to improve the device’s performance, it is recommended to force-stop such background apps.

To disable background running apps, go to Settings > Apps > App Manager > Running Apps. Select the apps you want to close and tap on Force Stop.

These settings might differ depending on your phone manufacturer or model, but you can search “manage apps” in the settings and navigate to the settings to Stop/Force Stop the apps.

  • Enable High-Performance Mode: Some Android phones have an in-built high-performance mode that increases the device’s maximum performance. Enabling high-performance mode can improve the phone’s performance significantly, leading to a smoother and lag-free gaming experience. However, high-performance mode might lead to overheating and battery drain in some devices.

To enable high-performance mode, go to Settings > Battery >High-Performance Mode.

These settings might differ depending on your phone manufacturer or model, but you can search “Battery” in the settings and navigate to the settings to toggle the performance mode.

  • Use the Game Booster App: A lot of Android phones have  a pre-installed dedicated app that improves  the device’s performance while gaming. For example, Game Turbo on Xiaomi phones and Game Space on Realme Phones. Players can tweak settings in this app and open the game through this app for a smoother and lag-free performance.

  • Restart Your Phone: Like humans need to sleep, electronic devices need regular restarts to maintain optimal performance. Restarting the phone clears the running background apps and tasks that may consume processing power and RAM, which can cause the game to lag or stutter.

By restarting your phone before playing BGMI, you free up RAM and processor load that can be used by the game, allowing it to run effectively.

  • Keep a High Charge Percentage While Playing: Keeping a high charge percentage while playing BGMI is extremely crucial for a good performance. When the battery level is low, the device’s CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit) do not work at their maximum capacity, causing the game to lag or stutter frequently. Hence, it’s recommended to charge the device before the battleground.

NOTE: Do not charge your phone while playing the game. Doing so will lead to overheating of your phone, which will increase lag and might also lead to some unforeseeable problems.

  • Use WiFi, Turn On Airplane Mode: Using WiFi and airplane mode may also improve the game’s performance. Most of the online games require a stable internet connection to run smoothly. WiFi, usually, provides a faster and more stable internet connection as compared to mobile data.

Furthermore, using mobile data also tends to overheat mobile phones as more resources are used. Besides, receiving phone calls and messages also affects the game’s performance. Turning on airplane mode can disable all phone calls, messages, and other network connections, allowing you to focus on the game and improve its performance.

To use WiFi and turn on airplane mode, go to Settings > Network and Internet > WiFi, and toggle airplane mode on.

  • Tweak Developer Settings: As the name suggests, it is designed for developers and is not recommended for average users as it may contain options that can potentially make the device vulnerable against certain threats. This settings menu is hidden and users need to follow certain steps to access it. Despite being associated with risks, some of the options in Developer Settings may help improve BGMI’s performance.

To enable Developers Settings, go to Settings > About Phone > Tap “Build number” seven times. Now, go to the settings and search Developer Settings.

Following are some of the Developer Settings that can improve your gaming experience:

Force GPU Rendering:  This setting forces the GPU to render everything that is being displayed on the screen instead of the CPU. As the name suggests, GPU is more graphics-oriented, whereas CPU generally manages all the input and output of a device. Using the GPU for rendering while gaming can improve the game’s performance as games require higher graphics rendering.

  • Don’t Keep Activities: Turning this setting on clears apps from memory as soon as the user leaves them. This can free up RAM and improve BGMI’s performance, but it can also cause some apps to malfunction.

NOTE: We do not recommend users to enable Developer Settings unless they have technical knowledge and are aware of the potential risks.

BGMI setting to improve BGMI performance

Following are some of the in-game settings you can change to get the best gaming experience on your mobile device:

Open the game and go to the Graphics & Audio settings, and set the following settings:

  • Graphics – Smooth

  • Frame Rate – Extreme ( or the highest available)

  • Style – Any (but avoid Realistic and Movie)

  • Antialiasing – Disable

  • Brightness – More than 100. Lower in-game brightness will cause you to increase your phone brightness, which might overheat your device.

  • Auto-adjust graphics – Disable

  • Audio – Low. Using High or Ultra settings may cause the device to heat up, consume more power, and FPS may fluctuate.

Although changing the settings mentioned above can significantly improve your gaming experience, the game’s performance ultimately depends upon the processing capabilities of your phone. If the game does not perform well on your phone even after changing the settings, you may have to opt for a phone with better performance.
