The Vanishing World of Filipino PC Cafes: Nostalgia or Niche?

Remember the days when Filipino PC Cafes buzzed with gamers, instant noodles, and epic battles? Imagine stepping into a cubicle, paying the cashier, and diving into DOTA 2, League of Legends, or Crossfire. The symphony of mouse clicks and friendly banter was electric.

However as high-speed internet and personal gaming setups became mainstream, the PC cafe culture began to wane. Bustling businesses dwindled post-COVID-19 and the rise of mobile gaming further eroded the need for these once-thriving spaces.

Despite a shift towards home gaming, some cafes are fighting back. Transforming into esports and streaming hubs, they strive to stay relevant. Will these efforts revive the magic, or are PC cafes doomed?

Dive into the story of a culture on the brink of extinction. Are Filipino PC Cafes a lost nostalgia or a niche ready for a comeback? John explores their fascinating journey and uncertain future.

Families Sue Activision and Instagram Over Uvalde Shooting

On the second anniversary of the tragic Robb Elementary School shooting, the families of the victims have filed lawsuits against Activision, Meta, and gunmaker Daniel Defense, accusing them of playing a role in “grooming” the teenage gunman, The New York Times reports. The shooter, who killed 19 students and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, allegedly used these platforms to train and equip himself.

The lawsuits, filed in California and Texas, claim that Activision’s “Call of Duty” game served as a training ground for the gunman, while Instagram facilitated the promotion of the AR-15-style rifle used in the massacre. This marks one of the first attempts to hold a video game publisher accountable for promoting weapons used in mass shootings.

“Daniel Defense is a predator but can’t get to the prey without the help of these other third parties,” said Josh Koskoff, the families' attorney, who previously secured a $73 million USD settlement with Remington for the Sandy Hook shooting.

Activision expressed condolences but defended the role of video games. As the lawsuits move forward, they face significant legal challenges, including protections for online platforms under Section 230 and federal laws shielding gun manufacturers.
