Baal, the Electro Archon and ruler of Inazuma, is a central character in Genshin Impact, captivating players with her enigmatic presence, complex motivations, and powerful combat abilities. As players explore the Inazuma region, they unravel the layers of Baal's character and confront the controversies surrounding her rule. Genshin Impact continues to evolve its storyline, offering players a deeper understanding of Baal's role and her impact on the world of Teyvat. You must have heard the name Baal more than once before you came in Inazuma. The Electro Archon appears to be the subject of this name. But you find out that's not the case as the story goes on in Inazuma.
Who Exactly is Baal in Genshin Impact
The current Electro Archon vessel and supreme leader of Inazuma in Genshin Impact is Raiden Shogun, formerly known as Ei. After her twin sister Makoto or Baal, the previous Shogun, perished in the catastrophe 500 years prior, she took over as the country's ruler. These two names, Ei, and Raiden Shogun are largely to blame for the misconception. While Raiden Shogun is the name given to her as the leader of the Inazuma, Ei is the character's real name. In a similar vein, Makoto was formerly known as Raiden Makoto while she was in power. Ei is also referred to as Raiden Ei by other characters.
As twin siblings, Ei and Makoto both have Archon names in Genshin Impact, Beelzebul and Baal respectively. Since only there can only be one Electro Archon in The Seven at any point in time, Makoto assumed the position first.
You'll still hear individuals refer to Ei (Beelzebul) as Baal in Genshin Impact throughout various discussions and data inputs, and here's why. Because they are truly unaware that the original Electro Archon (Makoto) perished during the cataclysm. Other Archons, such as Venti and Zhongli, take the name Baal as a nod to Ei's first association with Makoto. Ei served as Makoto's kagemusha, or body double, while she was the leader of Inazuma.
The Cataclysm and Baal’s Fate in Genshin Impact
Tragedy struck 500 years prior to the game's events when monsters began ravaging Inazuma. Makoto (Baal), compelled by an unknown force, ventured alone to the fallen city of Khaenri'ah, where she engaged in a fateful battle. Although Ei managed to save a part of Makoto's consciousness, Makoto ultimately fell unconscious and passed away.
Following a grueling duel, Ei defeated the Shogun and awakened Makoto's consciousness from the Musou Isshin. In their final encounter, Makoto (Baal) expressed regret for leaving Ei abruptly, apologizing for her intentions and sharing a seed of the Sacred Sakura. She believed that the creation of the Sacred Sakura involved the entity Istaroth, and without her intervention, Inazuma would have succumbed to darkness.
