Mortal Kombat 1 Ending Explained

Liu Kang and Shang Tsung are present for a final showoff at the end of the game. Liu Kang gave up his powers, and Shang Tsung secretly collected them in a jade statue from Kung Lao. If Liu Kang wants his powers back, he'll become a keeper of time forever.

Shang Tsung is causing trouble with an army and a network of portals. Johnny Cage uses a drone to spy on him and discovers evil versions of Sub Zero, Scorpion, Kenshi, Rain, and Ermac from different timelines.

Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Raiden try to close these portals, but they realize the life force of these evil fighters powers the portals. They have to kill the fighters and take their souls to close them.

Meanwhile, Liu Kang regains his powers and reunites with Titan Kitana. He also calls on Titan Raiden and Kung Lao for help. Shang Tsung has his own versions of Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Nitara, and Baraka, and they are trying to destroy Liu Kang's hourglass, which could erase his timelines. Liu Kang fights some of them, and with the help of allies, they save the hourglass.

Then Liu Kang takes the battle to Shang Tsung's timeline with a big army. They fight on a pyramid, and players can choose from various characters to join the battle. Shang Tsung also uses his summons to aid him in battle.

The story ends with a massive battle on the pyramid, and players can select different characters to fight along the way. During the mid-credits sequence, we find out that Quan Chi, Shang Tsung and General Shao are imprisoned. We also get a glimpse of Liu Kang who leaves his teahouse knowing that Earth Realm is in Good hands.

During the very final moments, we see the aftermath of the battle where Jax is lying on the stairs with his metal arms torn off. Havik approaches and murders Jax and shows signs of joy but laments the fact that the battle ended too fast. This will lead up to the events of the next Mortal Kombat game or a DLC.
