To a point, vanilla Minecraft is limitless. While you can build whatever you want, you are still limited by the features built into the game. Official updates usually include a lot of amazing new content, but they only happen once or twice a year. Fortunately, you may turn to the community's many brilliant creators, as the sea of Minecraft mods is virtually limitless.
Whether you want to increase your quality of life, develop new machines, or even expand into new realms, there is a mod for that. We dug deep into the modding community and selected the greatest Minecraft mods that will have you playing like it's a completely different game.
Best Minecraft Mods (2023)
Thousands of Minecraft mods are available online, with devoted updates even after years of release. To install them, make a folder called 'modules' in your Minecraft folder and place the downloaded modules inside.
Many mods will also require you to install Minecraft Forge in order to work properly.
Optifine / Fastcraft
Optifine, which provides support for HD textures and more control over graphical choices, makes Minecraft look incredible. You'll probably need to install Optifine before you can use Minecraft shaders, but even without it, it gives dynamic lighting, enhanced textures, and a performance gain. Optifine should work fine on most PC configurations, but if you're playing on a potato, use Fastcraft instead - it significantly increases performance on lower-end PCs, especially when a lot of Minecraft mods are installed.
Biomes O’Plenty
If there aren't enough vanilla Minecraft Biomes to keep you occupied, Biomes O'Plenty adds a slew of new biomes to the Overworld and Nether, ranging from the Alps to the Wasteland and everything in between. It also adds some diversity to tools, armor, food, and colour, as well as a few new blocks to build with.
Journeymap
Everyone enjoys knowing where they're heading. Journeymap maps your world as you explore it, allows you to mark waypoints of interest, and can even notify you when Minecraft mobs approach. View the produced map as a minimap in-game, in fullscreen, or in an external web browser.
Just Enough Items
If you need an antidote to the pain of alt-tabbing to a wiki while playing Minecraft, then turn to Just Enough Items (or JEI). It lets you look up the recipe for any item from any installed Minecraft mod through a nifty interface on Minecraft’s inventory screen.
Alex’s Mobs
Players are always clamoring for more animals, monsters, and humanoids to be introduced to vanilla Minecraft, as evidenced by the now-annual mob vote. You don't have to wait for the next major Minecraft update to see Alex's mobs' 84 new animals. Kangaroos, tigers, and a bone snake are among the genuine and fanciful creatures in this mix, and each has its own mechanics and drops.
