Highlights
Disney Speedstorm is now available as a free-to-play title on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch.
The game was previously monetized via a mandatory Founders’ bundle which has now been removed in favor of a free-to-play experience.

Disney Speedstorm is a combat racing game reminiscent of Nintendo’s Mario Kart and it is available on  PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch. The game features characters from popular Disney franchises and was released as a paid game with players being required to purchase a Founder’s bundle to get access to all cars in the game. On 28th September, the game made a switch to a free-to-play format.

What to expect from Disney Speedstorm

Disney Speedstorm is a free-to-play kart racing game developed by Gameloft Barcelona and published by Gameloft. It features various Disney and Pixar characters racing vehicles on tracks themed after the worlds of their films and franchises. The game was released on 28th September 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Disney Speedstorm is a hero-based combat racing game, meaning that each character has their own unique skills and abilities that can be used to gain an advantage over the competition. Some examples of character skills include:

  • Mulan: Firework Barrage - Launches a barrage of fireworks that can damage and slow down nearby opponents.

  • Sulley: Fearsome Roar - Unleashes a mighty roar that can scare opponents off the track.

  • Jack Sparrow: Pirate's Curse - Places a curse on an opponent that makes their vehicle slower and more difficult to control.

Players can also collect and upgrade karts and other items to improve their performance on the track.

Disney Speedstorm features a variety of different game modes, including:

  • Grand Prix: A single-player campaign mode where players compete against AI opponents in a series of races.

  • Online Multiplayer: Players can race against other players online in a variety of different modes, including ranked races, casual races, and team races.

  • Time Attack: Players can race against the clock on any of the game's tracks to try to set the fastest time.

  • Split-Screen Multiplayer: Players can race against each other locally in split-screen mode.

Pay-to-Win Criticisms

The only way to spend real money in Disney Speedstorm is to buy Tokens, the only in-game currency available for real-world money. With Tokens, players will be able to get cosmetic items, Season Coins, Season-related offers, the Golden Pass, and more.

Shards are vital objects in Disney Speedstorm. They are character fragments that are necessary to unlock and upgrade Racers and Crew Members. Shards are unique to each character and cannot be interchanged.

Players have criticized that earning these Shards is very difficult if you are free-to-play and keeping up with other players who spend money can lead to an unfair experience. It remains to be seen if the developers have managed to get its monetization right following its free-to-play update.
