Discord April Fools’ video titled “Discord Loot Boxes are here.” has received a whopping 1.4 billion views within 24 hours, shattering the GTA 6 trailer’s previously held record by a landslide.
Dataminer Marvin Witt suggests that the company has accidentally created a view bot by letting the view play on a loop in the background of the in-app toast notification.

Breaking YouTube’s view count record is no easy feat and it requires an immense fan following to even crack the top 100 most-watched list. While reaching the highest amount of views is challenging enough, breaking into the coveted ranks of the most-watched YouTube videos within 24 hours is an even greater achievement.

To everyone’s surprise, the most unprecedented breakthrough came from Discord, whose April Fools’ video titled “Discord Loot Boxes are here.” has received a whopping 1.4 billion views within 24 hours, shattering previously held records by a landslide. While the devs at Discord are yet to provide an official explanation, one software developer and Dataminer for the app seems to have unveiled the reason behind this phenomenon.

Discord’s Accidental View Count Record Comes From Viewbotting

Software Developer and Discord Dataminer Marvin Witt has explained how this could’ve happened. Witt suggested that Discord managed to create a functional YouTube view bot by allowing the loot box announcement video to autoplay itself on a loop in the background of the in-app toast notification. However, Witt also mentions that this was done accidentally, as even one of the senior developers at Discord was confused about this strange occurrence.

Although Discord has not made any official statements regarding this, their X handle appropriately tweeted out an “oops”, after beating the previous world record held by the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer by a landslide. The Discord loot box announcement trailer is still live on YouTube, sitting at 1,407,643,634 views at the time of writing.

The record for the most-watched YouTube video in 24 hours was notably accomplished by YouTuber MrBeast, with one of his videos reaching around 60 million views within a day, back in August 2023. This achievement was only beaten by the highly-anticipated trailer for Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6, reaching 90 million views in the first 24 hours since its upload.

However, the current “Discord Loot Boxes are here.” video has beaten that record, by gaining a staggering 1.3 billion views over the “Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1” video. To give you some perspective, that amounts to over 17% of the human population watching this video within 24 hours. Almost the entirety of the internet, including Discord themselves, is finding this situation to be hilarious.
