How to Find and Open Mutterlock Chests in Diablo 4

Diablo 4 is a game filled with countless treasures waiting to be discovered, and among them are the enigmatic Mutterlock Chests. These rare chests, distinguished by their golden locks, hold the promise of valuable loot, but unlike Silent Chests (which require a Whispering Key) or Helltide Chests (which can be opened with cinders) opening them is not so straightforward. 

How to Find and Unlock Mutterlock Chests

In our experiences with Diablo 4, we usually only came across Mutterlock Chests when we were grinding through the Nightmare Tier dungeons trying to level up our Glyphs. 

At first glance, Mutterlock Chests bear a resemblance to Silent Chests, featuring a gold lock on their front. However, once you click on it, a menu will appear on the screen, presenting you with eight different phrases. Your task is to find the correct passphrase that will grant you access to the chest's hidden treasures.

To decipher the correct phrase, you need to locate three Whispering Stones. These stones can be found scattered in the vicinity of the chest, forming a trail for you to follow. Each Whispering Stone contains one-third of the correct phrase. 

As you interact with the stones, a message appears stating, "The markings are illegible, but a whisper is heard." Keep an eye on your chat box because each 'Disembodied voice' will reveal 1/3rd of the phrase you need. Once you've clicked on all three stones and gathered the complete phrase, you can enter it into the menu that pops up when you click on the Mutterlock Chest.

Please be aware that there are dire consequences if you happen to guess the wrong passphrase. Should you make an incorrect attempt, the Mutterlock Chest will turn purple and will then detonate in a small explosion, vanishing without leaving a trace. So make sure that you have the right phrase before making a guess.

But rest assured, even if you misclick and get it wrong, you aren’t missing much. Unless you find enjoyment in solving puzzles, the effort required to open Mutterlock Chests may not always be worth the reward. Many players have expressed disappointment in the loot offered by these chests, given the complexity involved in unlocking them. It remains a topic of debate among the Diablo 4 community whether these chests should receive a substantial buff in terms of loot quality to better match the effort invested.
