Here’s How Seasonal Characters Will Work in Diablo 4

Blizzard Entertainment gave a detailed rundown of how seasonal characters will work starting from Season of the Malignant.
Players can earn exclusive rewards during the season and the entire seasonal stash will be transferred to Eternal once a season ends.

Diablo 4 will be introducing seasons from 20th July, and you can check out our Season of the Malignant coverage if you want to know more about all of the new content coming to the game. Unlike the Eternal format where your characters are permanent, Seasonal characters are available during a season in their own sandbox and they get moved to Eternal after a season ends.

Seasons gives the developers an opportunity to try out limited-time build possibilities, new game mechanics and explore other ideas. As a player, you can go after seasonal rewards and experience new storylines. There is a lot of confusion regarding how seasons work so here’s a brief rundown of how seasonal characters work in Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 Seasonal Characters Explained

To participate in Seasons, a new character must be made on the Seasonal Realm. You do not need to purchase a Battle Pass or any add-ons to play the Seasonal content, but you must have completed the campaign on either the Eternal or Seasonal Realm with at least one character. Once you have completed the Campaign, any Seasonal character will start the game with:

  • The option to skip the Campaign.

  • Your Mount available immediately.

  • All previously discovered Altars of Lilith unlocked, and the corresponding Renown for them.

  • All previously discovered areas of the map revealed, and the corresponding renown for them.

Once the Season has ended, the character you made and its progress will be transferred to the Eternal Realm. All items you collected, including the ones in your Seasonal stash, will be transferred too. You can take this character into Sanctuary whenever you please, but Season-specific features such as Malignant Hearts will no longer be accessible.

Diablo 4 Seasonal Characters

Should you play Eternal or Seasonal content?

Seasons provide developers with an opportunity to introduce innovative gameplay mechanics into Sanctuary for a limited time. They get to experiment with fun themes within the seasonal model without affecting the Eternal format.

Additionally, Seasons present an equal playing field. Diablo 4’s Seasons are designed for new characters to conquer the nightmarish challenges brought on by a Season’s theme and to progress through the Seasonal Journey together with other players.

Eternal is where you can push Nightmare dungeons and play the characters you have the most amount of investment in. In Seasonal content, you can try out new characters and builds and after the season expires you can always go back to those characters as they will continue to be available in Eternal.
