The female gaming audience in India is at an all time high with over 41% being female gamers.
The esports landscape in titles like Valorant and BGMI has helped grow the female gamers base but casual games are still dominating the market.

The Indian Gaming Industry has shown significant growth since 2020. Since the introduction of mobile gaming titles like Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) and Free Fire along with PC titles like Valorant, the number of gamers has also increased at a significant rate. The mobile games have become much more accessible to a broader audience even on low end mobile devices and has helped the Indian gaming landscape show notable growth.

Rise of Female gamers in India

According to the latest report by Lumikai, the gaming industry in India features 41% female gamers which contribute a noteworthy increase in comparison the years prior. Lumikai conducted a survey with over 2000 gamers which also revealed that the majority came from non metro cities. It also revealed that the age group for gamers in India is between 18 years to 30 years of age with a 60:40 ratio with each gamer spending 10 to 12 hours a week playing games.

Female Gamer

With the introduction of several esports titles in India like BGMI, Valorant, Counter Strike and more, the gaming industry in India has been able to grow at a fast pace. The number of female esports athletes in titles like BGMI and Valorant in India is at an all time high. Unlike BGMI where the male and female players compete in neutral tournaments, Valorant has segregated tournaments for male and female players. Although female players can compete in the male competitions like Valorant Challengers. Riot Games, Valorant’s publisher, has introduced tournaments like Valorant Game Changers specifically made for female players.

Although the esports landscape has helped female gamers show their true potential in the gaming industry, a significant number of female gamers still play casual games on a daily basis. Candy Crush Saga, Temple Run and Ludo King are some of the top most played casual games in India for a long time and are still dominating the market compared to other games.

Youtube has become one of the leading platforms in India where the female gamers have been able to showcase their skills with many of them live streaming games like Valorant and BGMI on a daily basis. A number of female streamers and gamers like Payal “Payal” Dhare, Kashvi “Kaash” Hiranandani, Kanika “Kani Gaming” Bisht and many more have been able to create a successful career in gaming and streaming with a variety of games.

The online gaming industry saw much improvement in 2023 with over 22% growth from previous years. According to a latest report by FICCI-EY, the Indian gaming industry saw over 450 million gamers in 2023 and surpassed the film and entertainment industry to become India’s fourth largest industry in terms of revenue.
