After an incredibly successful release on 3rd August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 is continually receiving praise from all over the world. Amidst this, many fans wonder if the third iteration of the franchise will undergo an expansion like the previous ones.
Adding layers to a storyline and exploring diverse avenues of lore has been a common practice among many roleplaying games. Given the D&D routes of Baldur’s Gate 3, there is no doubt that the stories are endless in the game. It is only a matter of when.
But the ultimate question stands. Is there going to be expanded content for Baldur’s Gate 3? Read on to find out more about what the developers have to say.
Possibility of an Expansion for Baldur’s Gate 3?
While the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 are enjoying immense success after years of hard work, fans are excited to know what else the team has in store for them. When asked by the founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, in an interview by PC Gamer, if they’re working on something, he responded in the negative.
“Honestly, we haven't started on an expansion,” Vincke remarked. While this is not ‘never happening’, it is obvious that an expansion is not happening in the near future. The same sentiment was shared during the 2023 Gamescom, when IGN spoke to the senior product manager at Larian Studios, Tom Butler.
"We'll carry on patching for a while and then we're all going to take a holiday and then we'll figure out what we do next," Butler said. He also mentioned that the team is trying to navigate their next steps, and that they “wish to do more”, but are not sure what to do.
Well, it appears that the team is ready to pack up and take a well-deserved break after spending years working on Baldur’s Gate 3. There are other reasons why there may be a long delay before Larian Studios introduces any DLCs to the game.
The most prominent reason is the major announcement made at Gamescom 2023. Larian Studios has finally confirmed that the Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will be released later this year.
After years of immense hard work, it is only fitting that the team take some time off to blow off some steam. Vincke has also expressed that he would like to shift his focus to other smaller projects. Talking to PC Gamer, he said, “I've learned in the past you need to be careful announcing things before they're ready, because sometimes you have to cancel them because they don't work out.”
Referring to the BG3 expansion, he remarked that while the team might be working on it right now, it could be boring. They will inevitably have to put it on the market for sale. Further, he added, “Because if we would continue on something that's boring, we would then have to sell it to you, and then we'd have to say 'here's a boring thing, and we want you to buy it.' That would not be cool. So we have to have the freedom to experiment and do our stuff. And then when we're ready to announce it we will.”
It will be exciting to see what the team has in store for us after they return from a well-deserved break.
