Overwatch League’s 2022 Season will commence in April 2022 with an early build of Overwatch 2.
The new season was confirmed shortly after rumors of the league going into a year-long hiatus surfaced online.
Vice President of the Overwatch League, John Spector, revealed that more details will be shared closer to April 2022.

Overwatch League (OWL) representatives have revealed that the event’s next season will kick off in April 2022 and it will be played on an early build of Overwatch 2, according to a report by esports journalist, Liz Richardson. After no news of an official announcement of a release date for Overwatch 2 or the Overwatch League, fans now know what to expect in 2022 from Activision Blizzard. While the event will be hosted on an early build of Overwatch 2 on April 2022, it does not mean that a public release of the game will be available around the same time. The retail version of Overwatch 2 may still be released on a later date.

Overwatch League's vice president shuts down rumors of ‘year-long hiatus’

The current iteration of the Overwatch League will end on 25th September. Vice President of the Overwatch League, John Spector revealed, “We can confirm that our plan is to begin next season in April 2022.” The announcement came shortly after rumors of OWL 2022 being delayed surfaced last month. At the time, Spector said, “It's really not practical to respond to every rumor about our future plans, but in this case this story is inaccurate. We have not set nor communicated dates about our 2022 season yet but do not plan to take a 'year-long hiatus' in any scenario we are considering currently.

After being known as a 6v6 PVP title for five years, the game is set to receive core gameplay changes with teams being shrunk to 5. Overwatch 2 will feature a 1-2-2 composition instead of the usual 2-2-2, which means that tank players will have to compete for the single tank slot when queuing for matches.

Overwatch Game Director, Aaron Keller revealed that the change is designed to make the combat easier to read and understand as a spectator and players alike. It becomes harder to track what eleven players are doing in the field compared to just nine, according to Keller. Reducing the team size also makes decision-making easier, as there are fewer variables to consider.

While OWL 2022 will be played on an early build of Overwatch 2 starting April 2022, it does not necessarily indicate that the new game will be available for all players by then. An official release date for the retail version of Overwatch 2 is yet to be announced.
