A Riot Games dev revealed on Twitter that the long-awaited League of Legends MMO might not ship.
He clarified that the team is positive but fans should not hold their breaths until it is officially confirmed.
The game does not have an expected release date yet, and fans will have to wait until an official launch takes place.

After announcing that a League of Legends Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) is in the works, Riot Games stated that there is no guarantee that players will actually see the release of this anticipated title. Riot created the Runeterra universe with League of Legends and has expanded the game’s lore with Legends of Runeterra, Teamfight Tactics, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, and more. An MMO would be the perfect addition to Riot’s lineup of games where players get to experience the rich and diverse universe, but a tweet by a Riot Games developer (dev) has definitely dampened the mood for many.

Riot Games is “optimistic” the game will release but there are no guarantees

Greg Street, who is one of the head devs at Riot Games stated on Twitter, “There’s no guarantee this game will ship. We are optimistic, but you never know until it does.” The MMO was first teased by Marc Merrill in late 2019 and it was finally confirmed in 2020.

After focusing on just League of Legends for years, Riot expanded its portfolio of games rapidly over the past few years. The publisher has not only released games that span multiple genres, but it has also licensed third-party developers to develop games like Ruined King and Hextech Mayhem under the Riot Forge banner. The company is also expanding to mainstream entertainment with Arcane turning out to be one of the most successful TV shows of 2021.

The publisher is already working on Season Two, a mockumentary titled “Players” and a fighting game set in the Runeterra universe. The League of Legends MMO would be the perfect addition to Riot’s lineup of games. With titles like Lost Ark and New World proving to be highly successful at launch in the recent past, the MMO genre is still lucrative.

With Riot Games talking about how the MMO might not release, a lot of fans might be upset about the news. Until an official release window is revealed, fans will have to wait in anticipation and hope that the project does not get cancelled by the publisher.
