Global Esports Signs Russ as Third Valorant Player of VCT 2024 Rebuild
Now that was an unexpected announcement.
Global Esports threw a serious curveball with the announcement of Russel "Russ" Mendes as the third player in its lineup for the upcoming Valorant Champions Tour 2024.
The massive roster overhaul seems to be catching steam as the signing of British/Indian player, Russ, has caused a massive uproar across the regional community, mostly filled with negative and discouraging comments but Global Esports is confidently backing its bold decision.
Russ made a statement saying that he is grateful for this opportunity and is committed to giving his absolute best to lead the team, which means that the 25-year-old is going to be the new captain of the side and will be calling the shots next season.
Global Esports VCT 2024 Roster Rebuild: Signs Russ as IGL
The overhaul for Global Esports started with the acquisition of Benedict "Benkai" Tan from Paper Rex. He was shifted to the inactive roster towards the end of VCT (Valorant Champions Tour) 2023.
In exchange, Cahya "Monyet" Nugraha, who was the most successful player for Global Esports joined Paper Rex as a replacement for Wang "Jinggg" Jing Jie, who would not be competing in VCT 2024 due to him joining Singapore's National Service.
This was followed by an announcement about Global Esports retaining Abhirup "Lightningfast" Choudhury, who was also part of the team last season but did not get ample opportunities to showcase his skills against international teams.
In the seeking of a new captain, Global Esports has shown immense faith in Russ to lead them in VCT 2024. This was quite a shocking announcement considering that he was not even part of the international circuit last season.
Russ is most known for his time with Guild Esports from January 2022 to October 2022. During his brief 10-month stint, he went on to secure a 7th-8th finish in the VCT 2022: Stage 2 Masters - Copenhagen with the team, a massive underdog run.
Unfortunately, the team's performance declined in the following tournaments and he was removed. The last team Russ competed with was called Les Petits Bouffons and it was not part of the franchised league, raising another concern against the player.
Global Esports has now secured three confirmed players for its VCT 2024 lineup,
Benedict "Benkai" Tan
Abhirup "Lightningfast" Choudhury
Russel "Russ" Mendes - IGL
Still, a lot of slots are left to be filled and it will be interesting to see which other players Global Esports sign in the days leading up to the closure of the current transfer window.
