According to a report by Bloomberg, the single-player Apex Legends / Titanfall game that was in the works has been canceled. While the game was not officially announced, there were job listings pointing at the release of an Apex Legends game being in development. The report reveals that the game was named Titanfall Legends which was being directed by designer Mohammad Alavi, who left Respawn Entertainment / EA in early 2022.
There were over 50 people working on the upcoming game
The Bloomberg report revealed that there were around 50 people working on the game when it was shut down. EA is moving some of the employees to other positions at the company and those who cannot be relocated will be laid off. Star Wars: Jedi Survivor which is also due for release has been delayed to 28th April so that the developers can polish the game.
It looks like there are troubled times at EA as Apex Legends Mobile and Battlefield Mobile were also scrapped. While Battlefield Mobile did not even see the light of day, Apex Legends Mobile released with positive reviews but the game saw a rapid dip in revenue and could not keep up with the likes of PUBG Mobile, Fortnite and Free Fire which is reportedly why the game is being shut down.
On the PC front, FIFA 23 is also reportedly the last game in the FIFA franchise. The football federation of the same name has revoked licensing rights for EA after failing to come to a new agreement. There are rumors of the soccer (association football) game continuing under a new branding but it is likely to go through some major changes as EA may have a hard time getting to use the official names of teams and players in the upcoming game.
Apex Legends and SIMs are two of the biggest breadwinners for EA currently and despite so many projects being canceled, the publisher reported an annual revenue of $7 Billion USD in 2022 which is almost on par with its 2021 earnings. It is unknown why exactly the Apex Legends single-player title was canceled as Respawn’s recent single-player game Star Wars: Fallen Order enjoyed positive reviews and there is a lot of anticipation for more Titanfall / Apex content.
