  • Valorant’s senior competitive designer EvrMoar revealed that there will be no hard reset for player MMR in Episode 3.
  • However, there will be a "harsh reset" in Season 3 which can affect player MMR or rank.
  • More details will be shared in a Valorant livestream on June 21 at 12 PM CT / 5 PM GST / 10.30 PM IST.

Unlike Valorant’s 2.0 patch which introduced a hard reset for player ranks, Episode 3 will not include a hard reset as confirmed by Valorant’s senior competitive designer EvrMoar. He revealed that there are no hard resets planned for Valorant Episode 3. However, he said there will be a “harsh reset” which will affect player ranks. Details on how the new reset will affect player ranks has not been fully revealed yet and players will have to wait until June 21, 2021 to find out more about the new changes to the ranked system with the devs planning to share more details in a livestream.

How Will Player Ranks be Affected in the Valorant Episode 3

EvrMoar revealed that there is no hard reset planned for Episode 3 currently so players do not have to worry about losing their competitive rank. He added “We will have a very harsh reset that will squish ranks, and will effect MMR (along with our other planned changes).”

MMR affects the hidden rating of players and it directly affects matchmaking. Players who have large disparities between their in-game rank and hidden MMRs should see a big shift once the reset happens during Episode 3. Players might drop a few ranks and will need to climb up once Valorant Episode 3 releases later this month.

Riot Games will be streaming on June 21 at 12 PM CT / 5 PM GST / 10.30 PM IST to share more details on what’s in store for Episode 3.

Why is Riot Games Not Doing A Hard Reset

The last time Riot Games conducted a hard MMR reset, fans were very unhappy with the decision. The problem with the change was that anyone with a very high MMR would only be matched with someone of similar MMR. And with so few players actually making it to Radiant in addition to the various servers breaking up the player population, it becomes very difficult for high-tier players to find matches. Sentinels’ TenZ was unable to find a match for 24 hours once the Episode 2 update went live.

It also allowed lower MMR players to reach higher ranks faster while better players were stuck, unable to find matches fast enough to climb. The system eventually normalized and players reached their true MMR but the initial few days after a ranked reset can be a bad experience for any Radiant or high Immortal player trying to climb ranks quickly.
