Kurtis Lau "Toyz" Wai-kin, who played as a mid laner for Taipei Assassins in 2012 and was a part of that year’s World Championship winning roster, has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. Authorities found marijuana in Toyz’s home with evidence that suggests he stored the drugs with intentions of selling it. The player was arrested in New Taipei after a search warrant was issued against the player. He has been charged with drug trafficking and has been taken to custody by the New Taipei police. While marijuana is legal in parts of the world, the drug is considered illegal in Taiwan.

Toyz may be fined up to $200,000 for drug trafficking

Marijuana is considered a “Class 2” illegal drug in Taiwan. According to the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act in Taiwan, possessing a Class 2 drug with the intention of selling it can lead to a fine of NT$5,000,000 ($200,000 USD).

A Taiwan English News report said that the Chief Prosecutor of the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the search of Toyz’s apartment. He was drug tested by the New Taipei police and has been detained until further notice.

ToyZ started his competitive career with amateur team CrossGaming back in 2011 and after a year of competing with the team he moved to Taipei Assassins. He went on to win the Season 2 World Championship. The player retired from competitive play due to carpal tunnel syndrome but he continued his career in esports as a coach. In 2014, he coached Fnatic’s League of Legends roster.

After recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome he returned to professional play and formed Hong Kong Esports with former teammate Wang "Stanley" June-Tsan. He left the team in 2015 and formed Raise Gaming to compete in the Elite Challenger Series (ECS). He coached his team to first place in the 2017 ECS Spring regular season followed by second place in playoffs. The team eventually rebranded to G-REX and ToyZ retired in 2019.

He transitioned to content creation and has garnered nearly 700K subscribers on YouTube. He also has his own Orianna skin in League of Legends which commemorates his world championship win in 2012. Taiwan has been strict about marijuana possession and its usage. Time shall determine what action will be taken against the League of Legends world champion.
