Highlights
Apex Legends' PS5 and Xbox next-gen upgrade is scheduled to drop later this year.
Respawn is working towards enabling 120FPS on the new-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
There is no official confirmation on whether the Xbox Series S will receive a 120FPS upgrade, but other consoles are slated to receive the frame rate boost.

With the launch of the new generation of Xbox and PS5 consoles, publishers are updating their titles to support higher refresh resolutions and refresh rates. While Apex Legends has received some tweaks to improve performances on the new consoles, a proper Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox upgrade is yet to be released. The game is still running at 60 fps (frames per second) but Respawn has promised a 120 fps upgrade in 2021. Here is everything you need to know so far about the Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox next-gen upgrades.

Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox Next-Gen Upgrade Details

The Respawn Team Director revealed in a Q&A earlier this year that “120 FPS is one of (Respawn’s) goals for the overall player experience for next-gen, we’re keeping this in mind. Can’t promise anything but with the core mechanics 'feel' of Apex being such an important piece of player experience, this is high on the priority list.”

A lot of players responded stating that they would prefer more frames per second over graphical updates as the gameplay of Apex is far more important than graphical fidelity. Respawn has been quiet since then but the publisher is expected to drop an update before the end of 2021. The last update we received from the devs was in September 2021 with the studio’s Director of Communications revealing that the update was still on track.

Which consoles are getting the next-gen console update for Apex Legends?

It is confirmed that both the PS5 and PS5 Digital are getting the next-gen console update for Apex Legends with 120 fps support. On the Xbox side of things, the Series X is due to get an update but Respawn has not confirmed if the much weaker Series S will receive an update or not.

All of the new consoles have already received a performance update, that makes Apex Legends run consistently at 60fps on the new consoles. While performance has improved and there are no frame drops compared to previous gen consoles, the promised next-gen update still hasn’t arrived yet.

Apex Legends PS5 and Xbox Next-Gen Upgrade: Release Date

There is no confirmed release date yet but EA has promised the update by the end of 2021.
