With the year slowly coming to a close, many people were expecting to see the nominations for The Game Awards. While the final nominees were made revealed online yesterday, the Dota 2 community noticed that this year’s iteration of The International did not make the final cut for the Best Esports Event category while League of Legends, its competitor, has taken two spots in the category.
The Game Award is hosted by none other than Geoff Keighley, creator and producer of the annual event.
The International 2022 has been left out in The Game Awards nominations
Following the conclusion of The International 2022 (TI11), many people were expecting the event to be nominated for The Game Awards at the end of the year. However, it seems that the event did not make the final list according to the list of the nominees that was released yesterday.
Here are the nominations for this year’s “Best Esports Event” category:
EVO 2022
2022 League of Legends World Championship
PGL Major Antwerp 2022
2022 Mid-Season Invitational
2022 Valorant Champions
Despite the amazing storylines at TI11, production issues as well as the massive decrease in prize pool winnings might have contributed to the event being omitted from this year’s “Best Esports Event” category. Additionally, this is the first time that The International was not nominated in the Best Esports Event category since the category’s debut in the 2018 edition of The Game Awards.
On top of that, its MOBA competitor League of Legends has taken two spots within the category with its annual World's Championship & MSI (Mid-Season Invitation).
Moreover, despite having won The International 2022 in a dominant fashion, neither Tundra Esports nor any person within the team is nominated for any other esports categories within this year’s The Game Awards.
However, despite the event’s omission from this year’s The Game Awards, DOTA 2 is still nominated in the “Best Esports Game” category, along with CS:GO, League of Legends, Rocket League, and Valorant.
The Game Awards 2022 will take place at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, USA on 8th Dec 2022. You can visit the voting page here to vote for your favorite nominees under the various categories this year.
