The International 10 champions are going home. Team Spirit after suffering a 0-2 loss against beastcoast at the ESL One Stockholm Major 2022, have been eliminated from the tournament and have finished in 9th-12th place which means that they do not earn any prize money or Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) points from the major.
beastcoast, on the other hand, have secured at least 240 DPC points and $12.5K USD in prize pool by making it through to the next round of the ESL One Stockholm Major 2022. They will face the winner of the BetBoom Team vs Team Liquid matchup in the next round.
beastcoast takes out Team Spirit at ESL One Stockholm Major 2022
In Game 1 of the series, beastcoast showed its confidence by picking up a Bloodseeker in the first phase for Héctor Antonio "K1" Rodríguez, who went on to repay the team’s faith in him by putting in a 18-3-4 (KDA) performance on the hero. While K1 has the numbers backing him up, a lot of the credit must go to the supporting cast of beastcoast: Elvis "Scofield" De la Cruz Peña and Steven "StingeR" Vargas who set up numerous kills for the team which was what enabled K1 to snowball that hard in the mid-game, leading to an easy win over Team Spirit.
Game 2 proved to be a similar story, but this time it was Jean Pierre "Chris Luck" Gonzales on the mid lane Snapfire that pulled off all the plays while K1 racked up the farm on his Troll Warlord which allowed the South Americans to take Spirit’s throne in just 33 minutes, in game 2.
South American teams have really come into their own in this major and are definitely showing that the region has grown over the last few years with both of its teams (beastcoast and Thunder Awaken) making deep runs in this event.
Following the loss, Team Spirit’s Miroslaw "Mira" Kolpakov commented on the loss by stating that it feels really bad to lose like this. “I can say a lot of stuff, like we didn’t expect that we could play in this tournament at all, we didn’t prepare well, our mindset is bad right now, and more stuff. But the one reason why we lost is that we just played super bad right now, it is not our best shape individually, so when it all comes together we just played bad,” he added.
He also stated that Team Spirit was going to work on this, understand the meta better and come back stronger next tour.
Team Spirit are still amongst the Top 12 teams in the DPC rankings 2022 and have a good chance of obtaining a direct invite to The International 2021 if they have decent performances in Tour 3 of the Eastern European DPC. According to Dota 2 statistician Ben "Noxville" Steenhuisen, Team Spirit still has a 99.46% chance of qualifying for TI11 at the time of writing. So fans of the team can rest easy, knowing that the Aegis of Champions will be defended at the biggest tournament of the year.
