Due to the ongoing protests in Peru, Dota 2 publishers Valve might have to reconsider their plans for the rumored first Major of the 2022/2023 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season. Earlier this season, leaks indicated that Valve planned to host its first ever South American Major at Lima, Peru after the conclusion of the first regional league.
However, following the detainment of Peru’s former president in early December the country has gone into disarray with violent protests happening all over the country.
Valve might need to reconsider plans for rumored South American Major
According to news agency Reuters, the country of Peru has gone into a state of emergency following the recent arrest of its former president Pedro Castillo, who attempted to illegally dissolve the state's congress in early December. It was further reported that the violent protests in the country have claimed 22 casualties so far, with local outlets saying that the protests will reignite in early January.
Back in early November, it was reported that the first Major of the 2022/2023 DPC season was scheduled to happen in Lima, Peru after the conclusion of the first regional league. Additionally, this would have been Valve’s first South American event.
However, following the ongoing violent protests Valve might have to reconsider their plans for the upcoming planned Major as events such as this are highly unpredictable, and as it stands, the situation does not look safe for any organization to travel to Peru at this current period.
Valve is no stranger to rescheduling and relocating events, as it had previously experienced it firsthand with the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, The International 2021 (TI10) that was scheduled to happen in Avicii Arena, Sweden was relocated to Arena Națională in Bucharest, Romania due to Sweden’s harsh COVID-19 restrictions at the time.
Additionally, during the 2021/2022 season, Valve had to cancel its first major of the season (ESL One: Los Angeles Major 2022) due to a sudden outbreak of COVID-19 cases, causing a huge outburst from the community.
