  • Dendi was DDOS attacked twice in two days during pro matches.
  • This was likely due to online bettors who try to influence the outcome of games in this manner.

B8 Esports’ Captain and Midlaner Danil "Dendi" Ishutin has stated that he was DDOS attacked twice in two days, in a Tweet posted earlier today.

What is a DDOS Attack?

DDOS aka Distributed Denial of Service is an attack which, through various means, makes it difficult or impossible to use a service (usually a network connection) and "shut down" a target (In this case: Dendi). The how varies, but the basic concept is that you flood the target with so much "noise" that it overwhelms their capacity to communicate.

For example: Imagine you are Daenerys Targaryen and you just ordered pizza. The delivery guy can't get to you because all these people are crowding around you. The same happens in a DDOS attack, there's too much data being sent to your computer overwhelming its ability to process it.

He, however, made it clear that Vikin.GG deserved the win, insinuating that the attack played no part in deciding the outcome of the game.

The DDOS Attack

Earlier yesterday in the BEYOND EPIC: Europe/CIS Closed Qualifier, Dendi disconnected from the game in the middle of Game 2 of the deciding lower bracket finals (Winner will qualify for the main tournament).

His teammate, Oleg "LastHero" Demidovic stated that it seemed like Dendi was getting DDOS attacked.

The match resumed after 15 minutes of pause, following which Dendi showed no signs of further internet issues. Eventually, Vikin.GG claimed victory, this knocked out B8 Esports from the BEYOND EPIC League contention.

A few years ago DDOS attacks were commonplace in many tournaments. It is believed that many pro players were attacked by online bettors who tried to influence the outcomes of games utilizing DDOS attacks. Even Valve tournaments were not immune to these attacks. The International 2015 also faced DDOS attacks which forced Valve to delay the matches by about 2 hours.

These attacks had dried up over the years since players became much more careful about securing their IP addresses. However, it looks like it has resurfaced.

Edit: Added description of what is a DDOS attack
