Polish Director to Create Film Inspired by the Journey of CS 1.6 Legends 'The Golden Five'

  • Janusz 'Hayabusa' Kubski and Maciej "sawik" Sawicki will also be a part of this film which is expected to release in 2021.  

Esports has been on the rise especially since the global lockdown that came into effect a few months back, replacing the traditional sports broadcast with virtual competitions, and it seems to have made quite an impression on a Polish director Filip Syczynski, who is now creating a feature-length film based around the exploits of Polish CS 1.6 legends 'The Golden Five’.

The movie which is supposedly titled GHOST is inspired by the journey and achievements of ‘The Golden Five’ which consisted of the following Polish players,

  • Wiktor “TaZ” Wojtas
  • Filip “NEO” Kubski
  • Lukasz “LUq” Wnek
  • Mariusz “Loord” Cybulski
  • Jakub “kuben” Gurczynski

These players played under a team called Team Pentagram (PGS) from 2006 to 2008 during which they dominated the Counter-Strike circuit by standing victorious at World Cyber Games 2006, the very first Intel Extreme Masters, Electronic Sports World Cup 2007, among many other tournaments to put Poland on the esports map.

But despite their achievements, the movie will not be a biographical film. It will instead follow a character who “fights for his dreams at a time when the Golden Five achieved its first triumphs.” Hence the director has emphasised focus on the credibility of the history associated with the timeline of events, for which Janusz 'Hayabusa' Kubski (NEO’s father) is one of the people involved with the film.

The director of the upcoming film Syczynski said that he likes challenges and is convinced that “We have to talk about esports despite high risk. Players should finally receive an honest vote. Making a film about them is our duty,” in an interview with eweszlo.pl.

He further revealed how producers reacted with “either huge surprise or laughter,” when he proposed the following project. But as the director himself has had experience organizing Quake II competitions in internet cafes, while also having visited IEM Katowice a few years ago, he was motivated to create a movie on sports.

“I went to IEM Katowice for the first time a few years ago and saw the best of the best, and realized that each of them probably encountered similar problems. Many must have told them that games were stupid and senseless, and so in Spodek, an idea was born to make a film that would illustrate the fight to live and achieve the dream despite everything.”

According to the director, the film will “talk about emotions,” while also showing the magic of the internet cafes where esports was born. He states that “The film will be cheerful. We talk about serious matters in a light way. We combine drama and comedy. Esport is more than just an unproductive sitting in front of a computer. The story of perfectionists improving their craft will defend against irrational accusations.”

Other people associated with the movie will be Maciej "sawik" Sawicki who is an integral part of Polish esports and is also the producer of the movie.

According to all the snippets of information given by Syczynski, the project seems to be well underway with many people from the esport industry contributing to its development. As of now, the film is expected to hit the theatres in 2021, but with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there might be delays.
