The Walt Disney Company recently announced a Disney Accelerator program with six Web3 companies.
They are Polygon, Flickplay, Inworld, Lockerverse, Red6, and Obsess.
This could be a hint at what’s in store for the future of Disney in the Web3 space.

The Walt Disney Company recently announced the companies that are joining its Disney Accelerator program which is a business development program designed to accelerate the growth of innovative companies from around the world. The 2022 class of the Disney Accelerator program includes six Web3 companies that are focused on building an immersive and innovative experience in the field.

In a press release, Disney said, “This year's Disney Accelerator class is focused on building the future of immersive experiences and specializes in technologies such as augmented reality (AR), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and artificial intelligence (AI) characters.

The accelerator program is a yearly investment and advisory program that uses Disney’s resources to help technology companies. Specifically for 2022, Walt Disney is focused on the Web3 space and the Metaverse.

The six companies that will be participating in the 2022 Disney Accelerator program are:

Polygon

Polygon is a blockchain and Web3 scaling solution platform on the Ethereum network. It offers faster transaction speeds and a lower cost compared to the Ethereum main net. It also allows developers to build engaging Web3 experiences.

Flickplay

A Web3 Augmented Reality company that focuses on NFTs known as ‘Flicks’, which can be bought or discovered through its augmented reality simulation in the real world. It’s described as a Web3 social app with NFTs tied to real-world locations.

Inworld

Inworld’s software allows users to create interactive AI-driven characters with options to develop in-game dialogues as well as a Metaverse, among other services. This company aims to allow the development of immersive experiences for users.

Lockerverse

Lockerverse is defined as a "a Web3 platform that empowers creators and brands to tell culture-defining stories and deliver unique access and experiences". This is the only information that is available about the company currently.

Red6

It is an AR company that has created a patented headset called ATARS [Airbourne Tactical Augmented Reality System]. It is an advanced AR headset that is used by the United States Air Force in the training of new pilots. The headset is used in high-performance and dynamic outdoor environments.

Obsess

Obsess is an experimental e-commerce platform that works with brands to develop immersive 3D virtual stores on various metaverse platforms and websites. It develops virtual retail stores for various businesses such as Mattel, NARS, Tommy Hilfiger, Universal Music Group, and many more.

Disney’s Future

This year’s focus does not come as a surprise as Disney has been looking to expand its franchise and develop a strategy for its entry into Web3 and the Metaverse since April.

Disney Executive Mike White, who is leading the company’s expansion into the Web3 space, has gone so far as to meet with senior Disney leaders to lay out the Metaverse strategy which was reportedly described by them as “next-generation storytelling,” according to insiders who were not allowed to comment.

In February, Bob Chapek, Disney’s chief executive officer, in an interview with CNBC, showed an interest in the metaverse. He called it the “third dimension of the canvas” for the creatives present within Disney.

He even went on to comment about how they have the ecosystem of Disneyland and how the “….metaverse is the blending of the physical and the digital in one environment, who can do it better than Disney?

Disney, unlike other major brands, is looking to incorporate its physical avenues such as Disneyland in the Metaverse rather than going fully virtual. As a result, it could bring some of these features to the popular streaming platform Disney+.

This is not the first time Disney was a part of the blockchain industry. Earlier, it released “Golden Moments,” an NFT collection inspired by its various studios and companies including Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.

The one thing that Disney is better at than most companies is providing new experiences and entertainment for families and kids. Its continued exploration into the Metaverse and the Web3 space could push the industry forward and provide a huge boost. There is a potential for attracting young audiences to enter the metaverse and meet their favorite Disney characters.
