In this guide we’ll go over how the breeding system works and how to breed your Axies

Popular non-fungible token-based online metaverse game Axie Infinity allows users to breed their Axies in order to create new Axies by way of producing and hatching eggs. Axies are bred to achieve specific stats and they can be pitted against other Axies in battle, and can also be sold on the marketplace. This guide will walk you through the process of breeding Axies and explain what resources are needed.

Axie Infinity Breeding: Resources needed to breed

Breeding in Axie Infinity can only be done a maximum of seven times and requires players to possess one AXS, the in-game token, and Smooth Love Potions, the in-game currency. Breeding will also take a gas fee from users based on the usage of the Ethereum network.

Notably, breeding in Axie Infinity requires three key resources:

  • Two Axies: Axies are Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) creatures that are used to play the game. For Breeding, you will only need two Axies. However, to engage in Player vs Player (PvP) or Player vs Environment (PvE) combats, you need to have three Axies.

  • SLP: Smooth Love Potions is the in-game currency that can be obtained by playing the game or by playing against other users. It is required to breed Axies.

  • AXS: Axie Infinity Shards is another in-game currency and is the main governance token of Axie Infinity. You can earn AXS by playing competitively or by buying it from other users.

Breeding consumes a fixed 0.5 AXS and the SLP depends on the breed count of each Axie. The breeding count is the number of times an Axie has been bred before.

Even though the AXS is fixed, the SLP is determined by the breed count of each parent hence a high breed count results in more SLPs being consumed.

The costs breakdown (as of March 2022) is:

For example if this is the first time you are breeding one of your Axies and it has a breed count of 0/7 and if your other Axie has a 5/7 breed count, then your SLP cost will be 20,700.

How to breed Axies in Axie Infinity?

1. Go to your inventory and choose the first Axie that you want to breed

2. Click on the ‘Breed’ option. This will open a new window where you can select the second Axie.

3. Once chosen, click on ‘Let’s breed’

4. Following this, in a few seconds, you will find an egg in your inventory!

5. It takes five days for an egg to hatch. When it is ready, you can select “Morph into Adult” and your adult Axie will be ready!

Axie Genetics

Axie Genetics play a crucial role in determining the classes, body parts, genes, and mutations of an Axie. Each Axie has 18 genes that are distributed among the six body parts equally. Each body part has three genes, and they are:

  • Dominant Gene (D)

  • Recessive gene (R1)

  • Minor recessive gene (R2)

The Dominant gene is crucial since it determines which body parts will be physically present on each Axie. It also determines the ability cards and the matching cards.

The probability of each Gene being passed down to the offspring is as follows:

  • Dominant Gene: 37.5% chance to pass this gene to the offspring

  • Recessive Gene (R1): 9.375% chance to pass this gene to the offspring

  • Minor Recessive Gene (R2): 3.125% chance to pass this gene to the offspring

These are important factors to note as these can determine which body part or card/skills you can get for your Axie. You can use the Breeding Simulator from Axiezone to learn about your chances or even use this calculator to look up probabilities.

Mutations during Axie Breeding

Genes have a chance to mutate. This occurs when a gene is completely changed into a random body part that is not inherited from the offspring’s parents. It should be noted that dominant genes cannot be mutated, and these mutations don’t have an effect on the chances of any other gene mutating.

The chances for an offspring to have a R1 and R2 mutation are:
