Twitch Bans the Word “Simp” From the Platform

Streamers and commenters can no longer call each other “simps” on Twitch. The change has been adopted as part of Twitch’s harassment policy, and it is not the only word given the red flag. “Incel” and “Virgin” are also banned, as stated by Twitch COO Sara Clemens. Streamers and viewers will have to avoid using those words, and it is up to moderators to keep chat in check.
When Does the New Twitch Harassment Policy Go Live?
Rod Breslau (esports consultant) first reported the new policy, and it is set to be active from January 22nd. Strict action will be taken against anyone who indulges in sexual harassment, and making offensive comments can lead to bans from the platform. Emotes will also be evaluated, and any existing emote with the word “simp” in it will be removed. Twitch said in June that the platform is “committed to continuing our efforts to make Twitch a safer environment” and talked about changes that would be made to the platform’s harassment policy.
According to Twitch COO Sara Clemens, the word “simp” is being banned because it is derogatory in nature and fails to adhere to the new policy guideline that prohibits statements on anyone’s sexual preferences. Any emote that uses 'simp', 'incel' or 'virgin' will not be allowed, and new emotes will also be denied approval.
Is The Word “Simp” Prohibited on Twitch?
The words will not be banned in every situation. Using the words for harassment will lead to action, but it is best advised to avoid using the words; else it could lead to a ban. According to a Twitch spokesperson, “We will take action against the use of terms like “simp”, “incel” or “virgin”, specifically when they are being used to negatively refer to another person’s sexual practices. Using these terms on their own wouldn’t lead to an enforcement, but we would take action if they were used repeatedly in a harassing manner”.
There are no details under what circumstances the words are not allowed and how a ban will be enforced. Twitch chat moderators will have a tough time considering how often the words are used on the platform. More details will be shared with streamers and the community ahead of the new policy going live next month.
