The Game Awards 2020: League of Legends Dominates Esports Categories

The Game Awards 2020 has finally come to a close, and the esports categories were swept by Riot Games, with League of Legends winning in four out of six categories. Here are all your winners from this years’ nominations from the esports categories. 

The Game Awards Winners (Esports) 

Best Esports Athlete: Heo “Showmaker" Su took home the award because of his performance in 2020 at Worlds, LCK 2020 Summer, and LCK 2020 Summer Playoffs. He is currently a part of DAMWON gaming and has proven himself as one of the best League of Legends Players of all time. 

Best Esports Coach: Danny "Zonic" Sorensen is statistically the greatest Danish CS 1.6 player of all time. With over $110,000 in prize money under his belt, he has left a legacy for aspiring players in Denmark. He retired and moved on to becoming a coach and eventually found Astralis. Zonic is one of the greatest CS:GO coaches of all time, with his team winning ten back to back S-Tier tournaments. Astralis has already cemented its place as one of the best CS teams of all time. 

Best Esports Event: League of Legends World Championship 2020 may not have had the same impact as they had in previous years. The pandemic kept everyone at home and forced Riot Games to move to a digital format. The event was a massive success and was one of the most-watched live events of this year in all of entertainment. So it comes as no surprise to see it take home the Game Awards trophy.

Best Esports Game: League of Legends bagged yet another victory this year with Riot’s biggest game taking home the best esports game title. With a decade of community support behind it, League is one of the biggest esports titles of all time, and it shows no signs of slowing down. 

Best Esports Host: Eefje "Sjokz" Depoortere is synonymous with League of Legends’ Worlds Championship. She was instrumental in making this year’s Worlds 2020 a success. The Belgian media personality has worked as a reporter, a presenter, an esports player, and has even won a beauty pageant. 

Best Esports Team: G2 Esports took home the award this year. Their esports teams from games like Siege, CS:GO, Rocket League, Valorant, and League of Legends have performed well at international events, and the brand is growing bigger every year. Their best performance was in League of Legends by far, with the team winning multiple LEC tournaments in the past year. This win at the Game Awards is just the icing on top.

The Game Awards 2020 was a resounding success drawing in a peak viewership of 3 Million and an average viewership of over 2 Million.
