  • NiP has announced that PPD is retiring from Dota 2.
  • The player spent over 18 months in the NiP organisation and thanked them in this announcement.
  • This is the second time that the player is retiring. After his first retirement, he went on to become EG's CEO before coming back into active competition a year later.

In a shocking development, Ninjas in Pyjamas have just revealed that their captain and TI5 champion Peter “ppd” Dager has decided to retire from Dota 2.

This is certainly a surprising development considering the fact that we’re in the middle of the Dota 2 season and nothing has suggested PPD’s desire to retire from Dota 2.

PPD's Legacy

PPD Has Retired From Dota 2!

PPD is certainly one of the most iconic and popular Dota 2 players in the world with a multitude of titles including a Dota 2 Asia Championship 2015 Trophy and a TI win under his belt. He is arguably the most influential NA Dota 2 player in history, who built the Evil Geniuses roster and turned it into an all-conquering juggernaut.

PPD did not reveal his reasons for retiring from the game in NiP's announcement, instead choosing to thank the NiP management in his goodbye note.

"Playing for NiP has been a true honor, they made me feel at home here in Sweden as a foreigner and always trusted me to do what was best for the team. I'd like to thank everyone for their hospitality and I wish them the best moving forward."

However, in a statement on his Twitter page, he revealed that he no longer has the grit nor the ambition to compete at the highest level. Hence he chose to retire.

"Hey everyone I wanted to write a few things publically about my decision to step away from competitive Dota 2.

I’ve spent just about the entirety of my twenties competing in video game competitions and at this point in my life (almost 29) I’m looking for something else that I do not think I can find in my current position.

Today I find myself focused on personal growth rather than competition versus others and because of that I feel like I have lost the grit and ambition necessary for myself to be the competitor I’m comfortable being. I don’t feel bad about it as I believe change is healthy and I am eager to do something amazing and new in my 30s.

I will be forever grateful for the people who believed in my abilities and saw the potential that I always believed I had no matter how objectively poor things may have looked in any particular moment.

I want to thank all of the fans and players of Dota 2 whether you liked me or not for the amazing world you created and allowed me to exist in."

PPD’s last game was against Team Spirit at ESL One LA Online 2020 (a 2-0 loss).

This is not the first time that the player has chosen to retire. Earlier in 2016, after TI6, he decided to hang up his playing gloves and become Evil Geniuses’ CEO. However, he made a comeback into the scene with some casual teams before forming OpTic Gaming and regaining success.
