ESL One Rio Major 2020 Cancelled Due to COVID-19 Pandemic
  • ESL announces the cancellation of Rio Major 2020.
  • This will be the first year since 2013 without a CS:GO Major.
  • ESL has promised to host the next CS:GO Major in Brazil itself as soon as possible.

What the entire CS:GO community was afraid of has unfortunately come true as ESL has announced the cancellation of Rio Major 2020. This is the first time since 2013 that not even a single CS:GO Major would be taking place in the calendar year.

“Together with Valve we had to make the tough but safe decision to cancel the ESL One Rio Major 2020 due to the ongoing disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We, and Valve, are committed to return with the CS:GO Major to Brasil when it is safe to do so.”

ESL Cancels Rio Major 2020 Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

With the coronavirus pandemic still affecting most of the world especially Brazil who is the third most impacted country in the world with more than 4 million confirmed cases, ESL and Valve keeping the safety of both public and players in mind has decided to cancel the Major.

While this news will be a really big disappointment for the CS:GO community who have consistently witnessed at least one Major take place every year since 2014, the Brazilian fans will somewhat be relieved as ESL has promised that together with Valve they will 100% return with a CS:GO Major in Brazil.

“100%! Together with Valve, we promise to return with a CS:GO Major in Brasil as soon as the global health situation allows us to and we can make sure it’s safe for players, talent, and you!”

Apart from this, no estimated future date for the Major has been provided by the organizers apart from the fact that whenever it is possible to conduct a Major it will be hosted in Rio.

For those who had purchased the tickets for the Major already ESL has stated that those will remain fully valid but if they prefer to get a refund they can request it directly through their Eventbrite accounts using the email address they had used to purchase them.

The announcement ended with ESL stating that “Brasil, we promise to bring a CS:GO Major to your country!” So despite the current global situation preventing ESL from organizing a Major in Rio they are adamant to host it in Brazil no matter what.
