Royal Netherlands Navy Competes in Local CS:GO Tournament

For the very first time in the Netherlands, an esports team from the Royal Netherlands Navy participated in a local CS:GO tournament, according to Omroep West.

The reason behind this engagement by the national defence organization was to recruit more young people. This CS:GO competition is more than just a game for Defense, “Look at the drone technology. The drone pilot of the future is currently working in esports. That is why we are going to such events in order to recruit young people. This way you can turn your hobby into a profession." explains Royal Navy commander Peter van den Berg, in a statement given to Omroep West.

According to the Netherlands defence, gamers fit the profile of a soldier quite well. “They are constantly making decisions under pressure.”

The Royal Netherlands Navy registered in the tournament under the banner of ‘KM Esports’. And though the team lost pretty badly, Van den Berg had a few words to offer,

“I never expected that we would win. This competition was the first step for us to enter this world. We hope to achieve better results next season."

This is not the first time that the defence organization has turned its attention towards esports, with the army putting up a stand last year during DreamHack Open Rotterdam 2019 to engage with the young audience.
