Hamburg will play host to the first premier Dota 2 event of the new season with the announcement of ESL One: Hamburg 2018. The company announced earlier today.
Last year's ESL One Hamburg 2017 was the first Major of Valve’s Dota Pro Circuit. But the tournament was criticized due to having just eight teams, and the short duration of the main event including the BO3 finals. ESL stated that the tournament was planned this way before the announcement of the DPC and promised that later ESL One events will see a shift in formats/durations.
True to their word, ESL One: Genting 2018 and ESL One: Katowice 2018 featured longer events with BO5 finals. The upcoming ESL One: Birmingham Dota 2 major also features a similar format which leads us to believe that this tournament will also feature a worthy format.
While the announcement has no details about the prizepool or whether the event will be a Valve Major, the fact that the event has been scheduled for 6 days and features 16 teams leads us to believe that this could be the first one of the 2018-19 DPC season.
No details of the qualifiers/invites have been announced yet. It will likely be announced post The International 8. For now, we'll have to wait in anticipation.
