Reee: Origins, Meaning and Use of the Meme

Published On:
  • Reee is a meme commonly used by Pepe the Frog fans to express intense rage and/or intense frustration.
  • Reee’s origins can be traced back to a unique croaking sound made by some real frog species when agitated.
  • Members of 4chan's /r9k/ message board popularized the use of Reee pairing it with Pepe the Frog.

Reee is a sound that later became a meme used to express intense rage and/or intense frustration. After 2017, Reee was paired with the Pepe the Frog meme and was widely used on 4chan’s /r9k/ board. Reee’s origins can be traced back to a unique croaking sound made by some real frog species when they get threatened by predators. As a result, the meme became popular among Pepe fans on 4chan as a way to express rage at ‘normies’. Reee is sometimes associated with the sound effect of the ‘Autistic Screeching’ meme which is used to mock angry reactions to political ideologies and alliances and is regarded as unethical in some internet circles.

Where did Reee come from?

According to Know Your Meme, on October 25th, 2009, the earliest known video associated with the meme was uploaded by YouTuber ppparaone, which gained over 2.5 million views in the next six years. However, the meme didn’t become popular until it was paired by members of the /r9k/ ("ROBOT9000") board with the already popular Pepe frog meme. The earliest known archived use of the meme was submitted on Dec 27th, 2014, featuring an image of Pepe the Frog accompanied by the message "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE". On Jan 23rd, 2015, a series of posts with Angry Pepe images featuring the cries of frustration appeared on /r9k/.

The message board was to be deleted in January 2011, as it ‘no longer served its original purpose of being a test implementation of xkcd's ROBOT9000 script.’  However, this hasn’t slowed down the popularity of the meme, which is still used today. Over the years, the Pepe frog meme started becoming associated with a certain movement in the United States, and using it has taken on a politically charged meaning.

Reee sounds similar to ‘WRYYYY’ and is often confused with it. WRYYYY is a meme originating from the anime series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures and is said by the villain of Season 1, Dio Brando when using his special abilities.
