The giant streaming platform, Twitch announced their “Local Subscription Pricing” initiative in May 2021 to the surprise of many, and they have just released updated subscription prices for select countries in the Asian Pacific region. We are seeing an astounding 77% decrease in subscription cost for a Tier 1 sub just in India alone, with the cost going from 479 to 110 INR. This initiative is all based on viewers’ local cost of living depending on their countries which is the scale that Twitch is using. While these price cuts are definitely a great increase in value for viewers, Twitch is still in the process of implementing these changes, which means that not every user can subscribe for these updated prices just yet.

Twitch sub price slash is a massive win for India

This comes as a breath of fresh air for Indian Twitch users since the previous 479 INR cost of subscription was far above the $5 USD (372 INR at the time of writing) equivalent that it should have been. The Indian economy has not been kind to users of Twitch or multiple other western services and products due to the price hikes that are involved in currency exchange and taxes. It will be interesting to see if they plan to also introduce Twitch Prime or Prime Gaming, which is a premium experience on Twitch included with Amazon Prime Subscriptions.

When is this new initiative going live?

After the initial launch of Local Subscription Pricing in Mexico and Turkey, Twitch reported viewers rallying to their favorite content creators and a five-fold increase in people subbing and gifting subs. They also announced the next set of countries in the Asia Pacific region where the new system would be implemented: Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, and Singapore are the next countries that are getting subscription price cuts.

Will this affect creator's revenue?

The initiative of cutting regional subscription prices may immediately seem like a loss for the streamers and creators of the platform. But do not worry, Twitch, in their initial blog post also acknowledged the effect this might have on creators and included a 12-month program for eligible creators to secure their revenue.
