Riot Games has confirmed that the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2022 will take place in Busan, South Korea. The first international event of this year for League of Legends Esports (LoL Esports), MSI 2022, will run between 10th - 29th May at the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), announced Riot Games. This will be South Korea’s first time hosting an MSI tournament and it also marks the return of an international event to the country after four years. Notably, this is the 7th MSI since the tournament’s founding in 2015.

The tournament’s format remains unchanged as per Riot’s announcement and the qualified teams shall be split across three groups.

According to a release by Riot, Global Head of LoL Esports Naz Aletaha said, “South Korea has been a trailblazer in the esports industry for decades. We’re thrilled to honor its rich history in esports, the passion of Korean fans, and the talent of the pro teams by bringing MSI to Korea for the first time. Busan was an incredible host to us during both Worlds 2014 and 2018, and we look forward to returning there to set the stage for the best League of Legends teams in the world to face off.”

Additionally, the teams will face off against each other in front of a live audience throughout the tournament for the first time since Worlds 2019.

MSI 2022: Tournament Format

Riot is sticking with the same format for MSI as last year. It also announced that the League of Legends Continental League (LCL) will not be sending a representative to the event because of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and due to the LCL (Commonwealth of Independent States) Spring Split being canceled.

The teams will compete in three stages: Group Stage, Rumble Stage, and the Knockout Stage.

Group Stage: This stage will be held between 10th -15th May and the teams will be drawn into three groups, with two groups of four teams and one with three teams. This stage will feature best-of-one double round-robin matches.

Rumble Stage: The Rumble Stage will be held between 18th - 22nd May and the top two teams from each group will move on to this stage. Here, all the six remaining teams will play a best-of-one in a double round-robin setup.

Knockout Stage: The final stage of MSI 2020 will be the Knockout Stage which will play out between 27th - 29th May. The top four teams from the Rumble Stage will advance here, where they will compete in a best-of-five, single-elimination round. The two remaining teams will face off in the finals to become the best League of Legends team at the halfway mark of the competitive season.

The details for the sale of tickets and other information will be released by the organizer in the coming days.
