G2 Surges Through Lower Bracket And Wins LEC Spring 2022

After eight weeks of terrific games and unimaginable upsets and outplays, the League of Legends European Championship (LEC) Spring 2022 Final witnessed two heavyweights of the league going head-to-head in the finals on 10th April.

Rogue took on G2 Esports in the final Best-Of-Five (BO5) series of the split to decide the champions of LEC Spring 2022. In what seemed to be a very one-sided series, G2 Esports comfortably won against Rogue in a swift and clean 3-0 sweep and claimed its 5th Spring Split title in the LEC. According to Esports Charts, the finals raked in 723K peak viewers, the highest of this split.

G2 will be representing Europe at the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) in Busan, Korea.

Quick 3-0 for G2 against Rogue in the finals

In the first game of the BO5, G2 locked in Ahri and Jarvan IV (J4), two picks that were pivotal in the team’s victory against Fnatic in the semi-finals, too. While Rogue’s early game potential looked promising, G2 had a better team-fighting composition with the likes of J4, Rakan, and Miss Fortune. Rasmus "caPs" Borregaard Winther picked up early kills on the Ahri and became a menace on the rift, thanks to the mobility the champion offers after her rework. At 30 minutes, caPs’ KDA was 8/0/4 and he had 25 stacks on Mejai’s Soulstealer. G2 successfully translated the Mountain Dragon soul and Baron Nashor into a victory and took down the nexus of Rogue in 34 minutes.

G2 maintained its momentum going into the second game. Unsurprisingly, the Ahri was banned and G2 picked up Corki mid for caPs. Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski’s Jarvan IV was once again crucial in getting early kills and on top of this, G2’s bot lane duo Victor “Flakked” Lilora and Raphaël “Targamas” Crabbé had complete control over their opponents. This game was a complete whitewash as Rogue’s base fell apart in 33 minutes.

Going into Game 3, it seemed like G2 had a really strong mental game, whereas Rogue was not as confident as it was in its reverse sweep against Fnatic. In this game, caPs locked in Ahri again, and G2’s top-laner Sergen "Broken Blade" Çelik came in clutch with the Ornn pick on top. Interestingly, Broken Blade won the lane against a ranged champion like Jayce. However, Game 3 which was in favor of Rogue at the start, quickly changed gears when Targamas turned the game around with a triple-kill on Pyke.

Fans were ecstatic to see G2 on top of the league again after a disappointing showing last year. The new roster of G2 continued to be under the lens of the community but the rookies showed up big time in the playoffs. The team has left many dumbfounded with its 12-0 record in the lower bracket playoffs run.

After losing to Fnatic in Round 1 of the playoffs, G2 was pushed to the lower bracket, where it stomped Team Vitality and Misfits Gaming with 3-0 scores. Following this, it went up against Fnatic in a classic clash of the juggernauts of LEC. Unfortunately, Fnatic looked promising and strong early on in the split but fumbled pretty hard in the playoffs. First Fnatic got reverse swept by Rogue and then lost to G2 in the semi-finals on 9th April, making it a 9-0 total for G2 in the playoffs.

Fans can look forward to G2’s performance at the first international event of 2022, the MSI in Busan. MSI 2022 is scheduled to begin on 10th May and conclude on 29th May and will feature 11 teams from around the world.
