Pro Players Express Frustration With Inconsistent DPC Rules

OG's Taiga and Tundra Esports' Skiter expressed their displeasure with these changes, with the former stating that it was “depressing.”

Following the conclusion of the matches in the Western European Dota 2 Pro Circuit (DPC) earlier yesterday, Tundra secured a third place spot in the tables. Despite possessing a 4-3 score this Tour (just like Team Liquid), Tundra did not need to play a tiebreaker since they had beaten the latter in the head-to-head matchup. At least that is what the official DPC Rule Book published last season indicated.

Since then, Dreamhack have allegedly changed these rules without any advance notice, causing frustration amongst pro players like Tommy "Taiga" Le from OG and Oliver "skiter" Lepko from Tundra Esports. Liquipedia (a community resource for tournament results and information) has also removed the Upper Division pages for the DPC citing inconsistency with these rules.

This sudden change to the tiebreaker rules could prove to be a major inconvenience to DPC teams. On /r/dota2, Dota 2 statsman Ben "Noxville" Steenhuisen had stated, “some of the teams playing in the tiebreakers have apparently started heading home.”

A similar story also ensued with OG. Following the team's victory over Entity Gaming on Tuesday, it finished the EU DPC 2021/22 Tour 2 with a 6-1 score. Gaimin Gladiators also finished the tour with a 6-1 score. However, since OG had beaten Gaimin Gladiators in its head-to-head match, Taiga had assumed that the team had secured first place since that was what the rulebooks had indicated. However, that is seemingly not the case.

The WEU DPC tournament organizers have scheduled a tiebreaker series between OG and Gaimin Gladiators, which indicates that there has been a change in rules that was not communicated to the teams and the pro players.

Taiga said that it was “depressing” to find this out since he thought that the team had already finished in first place.

Skiter also confirmed that these changes were not communicated to the players in advance. "Apparently we are playing tiebreakers for 3rd place tomorrow vs Team Liquid. Love the new rules on the last day with no advance notice," he said.

This is not the first time that the debate about inconsistent DPC rules has popped up. Earlier this season in the SEA DPC, BOOM Esports was forced to forfeit its series against Nigma Galaxy SEA since it was unable to compete due to a blackout caused by a cyclone near its bootcamp. However, in the Western European DPC, Nigma Galaxy was allowed to postpone its against Gaimin Gladiators series after five members of the team tested positive for COVID-19.

And who can forget the coaching controversy in the 2021 DPC season which saw Alliance wrongfully accused of cheating in the DPC, since the rules were so incorrectly communicated and inconsistently implemented across various regions.

Neither DreamHack nor Valve have issued a statement in response to this matter.

Update: The Western European DPC organizers have reverted the tiebreaker rules once again and cancelled the tiebreakers that were scheduled to take place today.

However, Tundra's Skiter and AUI_2000 were left even more frustrated by yet another rule change, which was made without any advance notice. The team had already canceled flights and delayed media days after it was told that it had to play the tiebreakers against OG, only to find out that the organizers had reverted the decision once again.

It is currently unknown if the changed tiebreaker rules only apply to the WEU region or across all regions.
