On OG's Monkey Business podcast episode 27, Johan "N0tail" Sundstein, Anathan "ana" Pham, and Sébastien "Ceb" Debs discussed their competitive Dota 2 motivation.
While N0tail stated that he no longer has the same degree of motivation as he once did, Ana stated a fairly similar response but added that watching competitive games restores a certain amount of spark.
Meanwhile, Ceb stated that watching other teams play motivates him since he feels compelled to compete again in order to defeat them.

All five members of OG's The International (TI) 8 and 9 winning roster are not currently competing as players. On OG's Monkey Business podcast episode 27, three players of this squad - Johan "N0tail" Sundstein, Anathan "ana" Pham, and Sébastien "Ceb" Debs discussed their competitive Dota 2 motivation. According to N0tail, he doesn't have the same desire to play as he once had, while ana stated that watching games offers some type of spark, but it's not the same as it once was. Ceb, on the other hand, stated that his motivation comes from watching other teams and feeling the need to demolish them.

N0tail, ana, and Ceb discuss their motivation for playing competitive Dota 2

The team's former carry ana featured in the 27th edition of OG's Monkey Business podcast, which was a pleasant surprise for his fans given the player's low profile. One of the topics discussed during the podcast was N0tail, ana, and Ceb talking about their competitive Dota 2 motivation.

While stating that he did not have the same fire, N0tail enquired about ana's current levels of drive. "What about you ana? Do you have high motivation to compete, to play? I mean I can say just for me that it’s not the same as it used to be,” N0tail said.

Ana gave a rather similar response to N0tail on his current levels of motivation. “It’s definitely not the same but I think watching - it brings some sort of spark but definitely not the same. I don’t know,” he said.

Ana went on to remark that his highest motivation came around the time he first joined OG, which was back in 2016. He was in China at the time, but later relocated to Israel and then Denmark after joining OG.

Meanwhile, Ceb, a Dota 2 pubs aficionado, provided an intriguing answer to how he finds motivation to play Dota 2.

“I get the motivation from just watching other teams, you know. I am like - these guys have to go down and then I can always find it somehow, I guess because, for some reason, it doesn’t come from within. It comes from the outside.”

Ceb made a similar remark when he announced his retirement in July 2020. He had stated then that he was simply offended that other teams believed they could beat OG, which provided him with a fresh challenge and drive.

While ana and N0tail don't play many pubs, Ceb, who has stepped away from competitive Dota 2, maintains his interest in the game by playing a lot of rated games. Ceb has played 81 games in the last eight days according to Dota 2 Pro Tracker, averaging 10 games each day.

With their current levels of motivation, it is unlikely that these former TI champions will return to active play anytime soon. Even Ceb, who spends a lot of time playing ranked matches, appeared to have little interest in playing competitively in the near future.
