We take a look at what AFK, OP, and GG mean in PUBG Mobile and where these short forms came from.

Where do AFK, OP, and GG come from?

Now that we know what AFK, OP, and GG mean in PUBG Mobile, let's look at where these terms came from.

GG

People started using GG in the late 1990s in online multiplayer games when internet slang was slowly developing and games like Quake and StarCraft became popular. Saying GG to your opponents at the end of a round became part of the unwritten rules or etiquette in the online gaming community. This is used to tell the opponent that they played well during the match or in the context of PUBG Mobile is used to acknowledge your teammate’s performance. However, GG isn’t always used in a polite way. Using GG before you have a clear path to victory can be considered BM (bad manners). This can backfire on you if you wind up losing the game, so avoid typing GG in before the match is really over. GG is also now used offline, sometimes in situations that have nothing to do with gaming. You find it used in conversations to show frustration or before giving up on something. For example, if your car doesn’t start, you might say, “GG car.”

OP

OP is an abbreviation for ‘overpowered’ and is used in the context of gaming to describe a particular gun, ability (like in the Runic Power mode), or any other element of the game which is too powerful. What is considered OP usually changes with the meta. The best guns for that particular PUBG Mobile patch may be called OP by players who want them to be ‘nerfed’, another common gaming term. Nerf or nerfing is used to mean ‘reduce the power of’.

Note that OP is also often used in online communities like Reddit and similar forums to mean ‘original poster’ or the person who put up the post. Depending on the context in which it is used, the meaning of OP can change.

AFK

AFK stands for ‘away from keyboard’ and It is used when someone is leaving their computer or mobile device so they won’t be able to respond to messages or do anything in-game.

Usually, when someone types ‘AFK’, they mean they will be back in a short time. AFK is also commonly used with ‘brb’ (be right back). Suddenly going AFK in-game puts your team at a disadvantage, especially in team-based competitive games like non-solo queues in PUBG Mobile or mobile MOBAs like Wild Rift or Mobile Legends. This is why many games have penalties to discourage players from suddenly going AFK.

Like a lot of other internet slang, AFK, OP, and GG started being used first in online chatrooms in the 1980s. People used it to let others in a chatroom know they would be away from their computer so that the people they were chatting with wouldn't log off. AFK became more commonly used in MMORPGs like World of Warcraft between raids.
