  • India may receive its own slot in the Valorant Champions Tour according to a report by IGN India.
  • Riot Games is yet to officially announce India's entry to the competition and AFK Gaming has reached out to the publisher to find out more.
  • Despite dedicated servers being added for the region, India did not receive an entry into the VCT so far and it remains to be seen how Riot addresses Indian esports.

A Valorant Champions Tour slot for India is being considered by Riot Games, according to a report by IGN India. The report states that a nationwide tournament will be held for this slot. Fans in India were upset when the developers announced servers for the country but did not offer even a single slot for the VCT event. That may be changing in the future, with Riot Games potentially reconsidering its stance. AFK Gaming reached out to Riot Games, who chose not to comment on the matter just yet.

India’s Potential Entry Into The Valorant Champions Tour

India’s entry to the Valorant Champions Tour can boost the country’s esports ecosystem. Multiple teams have proven themselves to be on par with some of South-East Asia’s finest. Team Mahi and Global Esports are among the top 20 teams in the APAC region, according to VLR.GG rankings

Skyesports founder and CEO Shiva Nandy told AFK Gaming earlier this year, “We need to understand their intentions and commitments for India. There might be complications, but it does not mean they don’t have an interest in India. We all should trust in their process. In fact, they never failed to provide licenses for Indian tournaments from Indian tournament organizers. We are getting great support from the publisher to date.”

Tencent owns 100% of Riot Games. In August-September 2020, the Indian govt. blocked access to multiple Chinese-owned apps citing security and privacy concerns. If Valorant receives more traction and India is officially supported by Riot Games, it will be interesting to see if the Indian government responds to it.

What Does It Mean For Valorant Esports in India

Despite Indian servers being hinted back in April 2020, the Indian region did not receive official servers until late-2020. Following the release of Indian servers, Riot Games announced its entry to India earlier this year. It has been working with the Indian community to bolster Valorant esports in the region.

A slot for India in the VCT would mean that some of the best teams in India can compete against each other to earn a spot at the regional and global playoffs. It would offer the Indian esports scene more exposure and help the community grow.
