  • OMEGALUL's meaning in Twitch chat is similar to ROFL on other social media platforms and the emote is an altered version of LUL.
  • LUL, OMEGALUL and LULW are all based on late content creator John "Totalbiscuit" Bain who originally uploaded his face as a Twitch emote in 2013.
  • The original LUL emote was rejected due to DMCA claims but it eventually became a global emote on the platform while OMEGALUL continues to be a BTTV exclusive.

OMEGALUL and Twitch chat can never be separated and if you have been on the streaming platform, you must have seen the emote pop up every now and then. OMEGALUL and Twitch chat have a fun but emotional history together. The emote is used on not just Twitch but also other social media platforms. While it might look like a hoop of some kind at first glance, it is actually the face of content creator John “Totalbiscuit” Bain. OMEGALUL is used in Twitch chat to react to something hilarious and it is essentially an evolved version of the “LUL” emote.

How Did OMEGALUL Become A Part of Twitch Chat

The face of the OMEGALUL emote from Twitch chat belongs to John “Totalbiscuit” Bain who passed away in 2018. Bain’s face is used in the LUL emote and the Omega version of the same emote shows off the late content creator’s face as if he were in front of a funhouse mirror.

There is an interesting history behind the original LUL emote. Bain originally wanted to use a photo of his for the LUL emote but the photographer who captured the image filed a DMCA claim. Following the DMCA claim, Bain uploaded the emote to popular third-party extension BetterTTV which allows users to get additional features on Twitch as well as exclusive emotes like KEKW

What Does OMEGALUL Mean in Twitch Chat

OMEGALUL, LUL, and LULW are all used to denote laughter. OMEGALUL is the equivalent of social media terms like ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) or LOL (laugh out loud). All variants of the LUL emote use John “Totalbiscuit” Bain’s image. After he passed away Twitch talked about how “John Bain's opinionated game critiques and sense of humor led to him becoming one of the most prominent voices in the gaming industry. The emote bearing his face represents the indelible mark that he has left on Twitch.”

How Did OMEGALUL Become A Part of Twitch Chat

After being originally added to BetterTTV, Twitch decided to make LUL a global emote. However, OMEGALUL continues to be a BTTV-exclusive emote. It holds the distinction for being the 25th most used BTTV emote and Twitch viewers have used it over 128 million times as of March 2021. How LUL evolved into OMEGALUL can be difficult to trace multiple variants of “LUL” creeping up around 2017 including “Megalul,” “Gigalul,” “Ultralul,” and “Teralul.” It is commonly believed by the Twitch community that Sebastian “Forsen” Fors’ community came up with the emote
