  • Due to the recent big changes to items, League of Legends URF mode went live with quite a few changes.

League of Legends URF mode was brought back in patch 11.3 in the all-random ARURF form. URF is widely liked by League of Legends players, some of whom only come back to the game for URF. Riot Games is alternating between normal URF and ARURF since the game mode was introduced on April Fools’ Day in 2014. The mode is usually brought back for festivals or special events as one of the rotating game modes along with One For All. Due to the recent big changes to items, League of Legends URF mode went live with quite a few changes. These changes are intended to let players engage with the item system without hitting clear traps.

Reina “Reinboom” Sweet, the principal tech designer and lead game designer of modes in League of Legends, said today that League of Legends URF mode’s return to the game will be accompanied by several changes. As League of Legends patch 10.23 introduced a lot of changes to the item system and how itemization works in League of Legends URF mode. Not only were new Mythic Items introduced to the game, but Cooldown Reduction was changed to Ability Haste to fit the new system better.

  • Summoners usually start a game of URF with an 80% cooldown reduction. But since cooldown reduction was removed and replaced with Ability Haste, all players will start with 300 Ability Haste that will scale with anything else that increases the stat.

  • Lethal Tempo and Ultimate Hunter are no longer changed to other runes when entering the game, giving players more freedom to snowball faster with their builds in this quick-paced and chaotic mode.

  • Champions that rely on mana will have any bonus mana converted to HP at a 40% rate. This way, champions can buy those powerful Legendary and Mythic items that also give mana without feeling like they’ve wasted gold on a stat that isn’t used in URF. This also applies to mana regen becoming HP regen at a 100% rate.

  • The basic support items which give players 2 gold per 10 seconds are also disabled in all future URFs. This means that Spellthief's Edge, Steel Shoulderguards, Relic Shield, and Spectral Sickle will be disabled. “Their minion gold penalty they give is at such an extreme penalty that is difficult to perceive that not having them available would ultimately lead to better experiences, especially for newcomers to URF,” Sweet said.
