  • Riot Games will be putting in more effort towards its lore and worldbuilding in 2021.
  • We will have more focus on Kingdom and how they came into the world of Valorant.
  • The studio has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to compare to its world of Runeterra established by League of Legends.

Riot is no stranger to deep lore and world building with League of Legends being home to some of the greatest stories video games have to offer. But the studio’s hot new FPS Valorant has been lacklustre in terms of building on its lore. While having great lore does not serve as a benchmark for being a great game, it does engage a part of the community that likes to know more about the characters they play with and the worlds they experience in-game. Riot will offer more cohesive lore and develop on the world of Valorant in 2021.

What to Expect from Valorant Lore in 2021?

The goal of the creative team in 2021 is to make Valorant feel like it is a part of a more cohesive and creative universe similar to the world of Runeterra created via League of Legends. Some of the things the creative team will continue to work on include map environments, battle pass content, music and backstories.

From the end-of-year statement revealed by the creative team, we got to know that the team wants to focus on future lore reveals. In 2020, the team focused on questions like - Who are these Agents and what is VALORANT Protocol?  What are we fighting for (and who are we fighting against?  Who is Omen really?  What school did Phoenix get suspended from?). The team wants to continue building on the “lore around Valorant and [REDACTED].”

The team also wants to focus on Kingdom and delve deeper into its lore. We will see Riot Games focus on the secretive bases and how Kingdom has a global presence in the near-future Earth depicted by the game. There are parallels the team wants to draw between our current world and the world shown in Valorant. There is no word on when all of this will be revealed but as Episode 2 progresses, we can expect more story content to be offered via in-game teasers, cinematics and more. The team recently held a concert featuring the POV of multiple agents at wwFest and we can expect similar events in the future.

When compared to League of Legends, the world of Valorant is still lacklustre in terms of lore, but we can expect the same level of quality and depth as the FPS title catches up to Riot’s more established MOBA in terms of world-building and lore over the seasons.
