ESL announces Intel Extreme Masters: Sydney 2019

ESL has announced the Intel Extreme Masters: Sydney which will be taking place for the third consecutive time at the Qudos Bank Arena from 3rd-5th May 2019.

The 75th stop in the history of IEM will be witnessed with the start of IEM Sydney 2019 which will be a 16-team tournament with a total prize pool of $250,000 USD.


Out of the 16 teams participating, 8 of them will be Directly Invited for the event while the remaining 8 will be making their way through various Regional Qualifiers. 

The 8 qualifier slots are divided as follows: 

  • European Region – 1 Slot 

  • North American Region – 1 Slot 

  • Asia Region – 3 Slots 

  • Oceania Region – 3 Slots 

More detailed information including the registration and qualifier dates will be announced in due time.


The event will be split into two phases starting off with the Group Stage and followed by the Playoffs

Group Stage

The Group Stage will feature two groups of 8 teams each.  

The Group Stages will feature a GSL format, with a BO1 match-up in the initial round followed by the rest of the match-ups featuring a BO3 series. The top three teams from each group qualify onto the Playoffs. 

  • The winner directly advances to the Semifinals of the Playoffs. 

  • The runners-up advance to the Quarterfinals of the Playoffs as High Seeds. 

  • The third-placed team also advance to the Quarterfinals of the Playoffs but as Low Seeds. 

The Group Stage will be played between 30th April – 2nd May 2019. The schedule is as follows with all timings in AEDT:

The Playoffs will be played in a Single Elimination Bracket. All matches except the Grand Finals will be BO3s. The Grand Finals will be a BO5.

Tickets for IEM Sydney 2019 go on sale tomorrow onwards, 16th November 2018 at 14:00 AEDT. 

Different types of tickets between which the general public can choose are as follows: 

  • Day [Starting at $39 AUD] 

  • Weekend [$139 AUD] 

  • Weekend Premium [$ 239 AUD] 

  • Global Elite [$1,199 AUD] 

All the ticket types include an early entrance option, allowing fans to enter the venue one hour prior to the official doors open time.
